College-bound high school students should first check with their guidance counselors. Oftentimes, guidance counselors will release lists of outside scholarships for students to apply for. In many cases these scholarships will be local in nature and less competitive. 

Current college students can reach out to the financial aid office at their respective institutions to see if there are any special programs that are not automatically awarded.
