How AI Technology Can Enhance IVF Success

A new study reveals AI can improve IVF treatment success by optimizing hormone injection timing. This technology could provide personalized recommendations, potentially increasing the chances of pregnancy and live births for many hopeful parents.

In a significant breakthrough, researchers have identified how artificial intelligence can enhance the success rates of in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatments. The study, published in the journal Nature Communications, was conducted by Imperial College London, the University of Glasgow and the University of St Andrews, with collaboration from clinicians at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust.

This innovative research employs ‘Explainable AI’ to analyze data from over 19,000 patients who have undergone IVF treatment. The aim was to pinpoint the follicle sizes that correlate with higher rates of retrieving mature eggs and successful births.

Optimizing Follicle Sizes for Better Outcomes

The study indicates that administering the hormone injection when follicles measure between 13-18 mm leads to better outcomes. This finding contrasts with the current clinical practice, which focuses primarily on the largest follicles, sized 17-18 mm, potentially missing the opportunity to optimize the retrieval of mature eggs.

By tailoring the hormone injection timing to maximize the number of intermediately sized follicles, the AI-driven approach could improve the number of successful pregnancies and births.

The researchers are now planning to develop an AI tool tailored to these findings to support clinicians in making more precise decisions throughout the IVF process.

“IVF provides help and hope for many patients who are unable to conceive but it’s an invasive, expensive and time-consuming treatment,” co-senior author Ali Abbara, an NIHR clinician scientist at Imperial College London, said in a news release. “AI can offer a new paradigm in how we deliver IVF treatment and could lead to better outcomes for patients.”

Harnessing Rich IVF Data

IVF treatment generates a wealth of data, which can be challenging to interpret comprehensively.

The study showcases how AI can manage this data complexity, offering insights that refine medical decision-making and personalize treatments.

“Our study has shown that AI methods are well suited to analyzing complex IVF data,” added Abbara. “In future, AI could be used to provide accurate recommendations to improve decision-making and aid in personalization of treatment, so that we can give each couple the very best possible chance of having a baby.”

The potential application of AI in IVF not only marks a scientific advancement but also brings hope to many couples facing infertility. By increasing the success rates of IVF, this technology can have a profound emotional and economic impact on families and health care systems globally.

“Explainable AI can be a valuable resource in health care. Where the stakes are so high for making the best possible decision, this technique can support doctors’ decision-making and lead to better outcomes for patients,” co-senior author Thomas Heinis, a professor in data management at Imperial College London, said in the news release.

The team will be seeking funding to take their AI tool into clinical trials.
