Anthropic Lets You Query Its AI Jobs Data Through Claude

Anthropic has released a connector for Claude that makes its Economic Index — a dataset of real AI usage patterns across the economy — queryable by anyone in plain English. No spreadsheets, no academic reports required. It’s free and takes about a minute to set up.

On July 22, 2026, Anthropic launched a connector for Claude that lets any user ask plain-English questions about how AI is actually being used across different jobs, industries and regions — and get answers grounded in real observed data rather than modeled projections or expert guesses.

The connector links Claude to the Anthropic Economic Index, an ongoing research dataset the company has been publishing since early 2025 that analyzes real AI conversations (with privacy protections applied) to track how workers are using Claude across the economy. The most recent data release came in June 2026. To enable it, users open the connectors menu on claude.ai, find the Anthropic Economic Index in the directory, and switch it on — a process Anthropic says takes about a minute. There’s nothing to install, and it works in any conversation across all Claude models.

Once enabled, users can ask questions like “Which occupations use AI the most?” or “What sorts of tasks do teachers use Claude for?” and receive answers pulled directly from the Index. Geographic queries are also supported — for instance, asking what the most common Claude use cases are in a specific state.

“The Index’s data has been useful to researchers, journalists, and policymakers, but we want it to be just as accessible to anyone curious about how AI fits into their field or day-to-day life,” Anthropic wrote. 

Anthropic is upfront about a core limitation: the Index captures patterns in Claude usage, not the labor market as a whole. The company says Claude is designed to flag that caveat and surface the underlying source data as users explore. The full datasets are also freely available on Anthropic’s website for anyone who wants to work with the raw numbers directly, and they’re released under a CC-BY open license.

What Makes This Different From Other AI-and-Jobs Tools

The AI exposure and job-risk space is crowded, but most tools in it fall into one of two camps: automated job-application services, or static calculators that estimate how much of an occupation’s tasks could be handled by AI. The latter category draws on data from sources like the Bureau of Labor Statistics, O*NET, the OECD and various academic frameworks — and those frameworks have real value. A 2026 Yale Budget Lab analysis spanning seven different AI exposure metrics found broad agreement that clerical, administrative and content-creation roles face the highest exposure.

But as researchers have noted, those tools are ultimately producing informed estimates based on human and AI judgment about task overlap. They don’t distinguish well between AI replacing a worker and AI making that worker more productive. And none of them let users interactively interrogate actual conversation data — by occupation, task type or geography — through a chat interface. Static dashboards exist, including tools covering AI and robotics exposure for hundreds of U.S. occupations, but they don’t have a conversational layer that retrieves and explains the underlying data on demand. Being able to query that data directly, without downloading spreadsheets or parsing dense academic papers, lowers the bar for informed decision-making significantly. A nursing student can ask what tasks healthcare workers are currently automating. A journalism major can ask how content-creation roles are actually using AI tools. A computer science student can ask whether software development tasks are being augmented or replaced.

Anthropic’s recommended approach is to start broad — “What does the Index say about my industry?” — and then drill down into specifics, asking Claude to show the underlying data behind any answer it gives. That workflow is a reasonable model for anyone trying to make sense of a fast-moving and often overhyped conversation about AI and work.
