Scholarship Summary

The National Press Club Diversity Scholarship for Studies in Journalism is offering this $2,000 scholarship to further diversity in journalism and includes a one-time $500 book stipend in the memory of the late Ellen Masin Persina, a club member.

This scholarship is open to those who are preparing to enter college and intend to become a journalist and bring diversity to U.S. journalism!

Eligiblity:

  • Applicant must be a high school senior with a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
  • Applicant must be pursuing a career in journalism.

How to Apply:

Applicants must provide the following information in triplicate (3 copies of all requested information). All information must be included in one package, including recommendations – newspaper articles must be reduced to 8 ½ by 11 sheets only. 

  • No more than five (5) work samples demonstrating an ongoing interest in journalism through work on a high school newspaper or other media. These may be print articles (reduced to 8 ½ by 11 size), or multimedia stories on a CD or DVD (three copies of all media).
  • A 500-word essay explaining how s/he would add diversity to US journalism.
  • Three letters of recommendations from persons who are not members of your family (Must be included in the same package.)
  • A copy of your high school transcript (Must be mailed in the same package).
  • A completed signed copy of the Financial Aid Form (FAFSA) that you submitted.
  • A letter of acceptance from the college/university of your choice or some documentation indicating where you have applied.
  • A brief description of how you have pursued journalism in high school.
  • The student may discuss financial need or any special circumstances that would assist the Scholarship Committee in selecting a nominee.
