The 2024 AP exams will take place over a two-week period in May: May 6–10 and May 13–17.

The AP Macroeconomics exam for 2024 will be a full-length paper-and-pencil exam that students can take in school only.

Will I get college credit for the 2024 AP Macroeconomics exam?

Students who take the 2024 AP Macroeconomics exam will be eligible for college credit.

As in previous years, a student must obtain a score of 3, 4, or 5 to be eligible for college credit.

In 2024, eight AP exam subjects are available as a digital exam in the 48 contiguous states and Washington, D.C. However, the 2024 AP Macroeconomics exam is not available as a digital exam.

The 2024 AP Macroeconomics exam will test students on the whole course content, so be prepared to answer questions on these topics:

  • Unit 2: Economic Indicators and the Business Cycle
  • Unit 3: National Income and Price Determination 
  • Unit 4: Financial Sector
  • Unit 5: Long-Run Consequences of Stabilization Policies
  • Unit 6: Open Economy–International Trade and Finance

What is the AP Macroeconomics exam format for 2024?

The 2024 AP Macroeconomics exam will be split equally between two sections: multiple-choice and free-response questions. The multiple-choice section is worth 66 percent of the exam score while the free-response section is worth 33 percent. (The percentages don’t add up to 100 percent, but these are the numbers posted on the College Board site.) 

You will have 1 hour, 10 minutes to answer 60 multiple-choice questions and 1 hour to answer 3 free-response questions. The time allotted for the free-response section includes a 10-minute reading period.

Please note also that the May 2024 Macroeconomics exam questions “will reflect the Federal Reserve’s updated measurement of the monetary aggregates designated as M1 and M2.” Check with your AP Macroeconomics teacher if you have questions.

Be advised, though, that there are changes for the May 2024 AP Macroeconomics exam, as mentioned above, so “some questions from previous AP Macroeconomics Exams may not perfectly align with the course updates.” The College Board, however, is making these questions available “because teachers indicate that imperfectly aligned questions still provide instructional value.”
