The Republican party is said to be at risk of losing the Millennial generation to democrats. Younger voters do have more liberal views but the guidelines of being a republican have become a little more 21st century. Are students only declaring themselves a democrat because they believe in the party’s social issues of gay marriage, abortion and gun laws? Because now, in the year 2016 there are republicans that are no longer opposed to the social issues of the democratic party. With the 2016 presidential election coming up and a lot of Millennials being first time voters, it’s important for students to know the differences between the parties. There are 10 major topics that the parties are known to differ on. Not all Democrats or Republicans feel this way exactly, but this should give a good idea of the important points that make up each party’s platform.

1. Tax Policy

DemocratsWants tax cuts for middle and lower income families.
Republicans– Wants tax cuts for everyone.

DemocratsUsually pro choice, for gay marriage and believe in strict gun control.
Republicans– Usually against abortion, gay marriage and promote the right to own a gun.

Democrats– Want to increase minimum wage so Americans have more money to purchase goods; in favor of trade restrictions to protect Americans.

Republicans– Want less funding to go into these programs and are more in favor of supporting private organizations to support people in need.

6. Foreign Policy

Both parties agree in aid for other countries but disagree on who should receive it.

Democrats– Favor as little military involvement as possible.
Republicans– Favor full military effort.

7. Energy Issues and the Environment

Democrats– Want to cut back on drilling to protect the environment.
Republicans– Want to expand drilling to cut cost for the consumers.

8. Education

Both Parties agree there NEEDS to be change here.

Democrats– Want to grow and make the programs in school more suitable for the future, favor for the government to give out more college loans.
Republicans– Want a more conservative programs with longer hours and stricter programs, favors private sectors to give out loans not the government.

9. Crime and Capital Punishment

Democrats– Usually gainst the death penalty,and believe in rehabilitation.
Republicans– Usually favor the death penalty, and believe in harsher punishments.

10. Individual Liberty

Democrats– Believe that there should be restrictions in some of the freedom that people have, and that people need to be protected against themselves.
Republicans– Believe people are responsible for themselves and that they should be able to make their own decisions as long as they don’t break any existing laws.
