About this internship

Tesla is hiring an Embedded Software Engineer Intern for Firmware Platforms for Winter/Spring 2026 in Palo Alto, CA, with on-site work. In this role, you’ll likely help develop and maintain firmware, working in both bare-metal and RTOS environments while applying strong software design and maintainability practices. Candidates should be pursuing a Computer Science degree (or related field) with a graduation date between 2026–2027, and the pay range is $40–$56 per hour.

Qualifications

Required

  • Pursuing a Degree in Computer Science or related field with a graduation date between 2026-2027
  • Experience writing firmware in both a bare-metal and RTOS context
  • Strong software fundamentals including software design and maintainability

Nice to have

  • Comfort reading and improving existing embedded firmware code with an emphasis on maintainability.
  • Ability to clearly document design decisions and communicate tradeoffs in firmware/platform work.
  • Experience applying structured software design practices (e.g., modularity and well-defined interfaces) in embedded projects.
  • Familiarity moving between low-level, bare-metal code and RTOS-based components within the same codebase.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills and a methodical approach to isolating and fixing firmware issues.

How to stand out (TUN tip)

In your application, briefly describe one project where you wrote firmware in a bare-metal context and one where you worked with an RTOS, focusing on what you owned and how you improved reliability or maintainability. If you include code samples or a portfolio link, make sure it’s easy to access and highlights your design choices and testing approach.
