The effect of technology on news is the topic of the this scholarship’s essay. Do you have any thoughts on the subject?

Eligibility:

• In order to be eligible to participate in the contest, applicants must be a current or prospective college student.

How to Apply:

• Applicants must submit a 500-word essay responding to the following question: How do the mainstream and social media impact the trajectory of the life cycle of a given news story? For example, were the riots following Freddie Gray’s death in the custody of Baltimore police shaped by the fact that they were broadcast live across the country? What is the media’s responsibility in a situation such as that? How does the addition of amateur video from average citizens play into the equation?
• Email your application to ricescholarship@gmail.com with the following information:

1. The applicant’s name  & address
2. Proof of matriculation for the fall of 2017
3. The applicant’s major or intended area of study
4. Applicant’s curriculum vitae
