Founded in 2002, the National Society of High School Scholars (NSHSS) is a nonprofit organization that supports high school students in their pursuit of higher education.

The organization, which was co-founded by the grandnephew of Alfred Nobel, finds inspiration from the Nobel Prize’s mission to support academic achievement and world betterment.

NSHSS’s mission is “to recognize academic excellence and honor the highest achieving high school students, providing them with the resources and network to excel in college, career and community.”

To achieve its mission, NSHSS connects its student members with scholarships, college fairs, internships, career and leadership opportunities, partner discounts and more.

Students pay a one-time $75 lifetime membership fee to access these resources.

To date, more than two million students from over 170 countries have joined NSHSS.

NSHSS Scholarships

Students who join NSHSS can take advantage of the $2+ million in scholarships that the organization and its partners offer each year. There is no fee involved.

Scholarships are available for high school and college students to help them afford college, study abroad, summer programs and graduate school.

These scholarships are awarded for academic excellence, entrepreneurship, leadership, literature, medicine, music, STEM, sustainability, visual arts and more.

NSHSS Events

Each year, NSHSS hosts several member events to celebrate member achievements and provide students with networking and learning opportunities.

NSHSS workshops and presentations allow student members to learn the best ways to prepare for college and future careers from university educators and partners. And college and career fairs allow students the opportunity to interact one-on-one with university representatives.

On April 21, 2022, for example, the organization will host “Earth Day is Every Day Virtual Panel.” A panel of three NSHSS members who have earned scholarships or grants, such as the NSHSS Be More Fund, will discuss their creative solutions to environmental issues, what inspired them to get involved and how attendees can give back to their local community.

NSHSS Webinars

NSHSS also hosts educational webinars on a variety of topics relevant to high school and college students.

On March 29, 2022, for example, the organization will host a webinar on “Career Opportunities at the U.S. Department of State.” Students interested in foreign affairs, public diplomacy or people-to-people exchanges can gain insight into opportunities for an overseas and domestic career, internships and fellowships.
