Student loan debt has hit an all-time high of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorkfed.org\/newsevents\/news\/research\/2022\/20220510\" title=\"nearly $1.6 trillion\">$1.59 trillion<\/a> in January 2022, with borrowers graduating with an average debt of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/advisor\/student-loans\/average-student-loan-statistics\/\" title=\"$28,950\">$28,950<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To keep your debt to a minimum, it is critical that you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tun.com\/blog\/how-to-maximize-your-financial-aid\/\" title=\"maximize your financial aid\">maximize your financial aid<\/a> from the outset. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Borrow only as a last resort and apply for as many scholarships as you can to help pay for college.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Treat the scholarship search like a job,&#8221; Cathy Mueller, the executive director of Mapping Your Future, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tun.com\/blog\/how-to-pay-for-college-interview-with-cathy-mueller-executive-director-mapping-your-future\/\" title=\"advises\">advises<\/a>. &#8220;If you spend 10 hours applying and searching for scholarships and you win only one $1,000 scholarship, that\u2019s like earning $100 an hour.
