This breakthrough technology enables more scalable and agile carbon mitigation strategies, addressing a critical issue in the fight against climate change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The study, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41560-024-01654-z\" title=\"\">published<\/a> in Nature Energy, describes the reactor as having a modular, three-chambered structure with a highly engineered porous solid electrolyte layer at its core. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Haotian Wang, a corresponding author of the study, emphasized the significance of this development. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur research findings present an opportunity to make carbon capture more cost-effective and practically viable across a wide range of industries,\u201d Wang, an associate professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering, said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/news.rice.edu\/news\/2024\/reactor-developed-rice-could-make-direct-air-capture-more-energy-efficient\" title=\"\">news release<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:23px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Rice reactor could make direct air capture more energy efficient\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/5h8urxYnh98?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Credit:<\/em> Video by Gustavo Raskoksy\/Rice University<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:9px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur work focused on using electrical energy instead of thermal energy to regenerate carbon dioxide,\u201d added co-first author Zhiwei Fang, a Rice postdoctoral researcher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This approach not only operates at room temperature but also eliminates the need for additional chemicals and prevents the generation of unwanted byproducts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Traditional carbon capture methods often require high-temperature processes to regenerate carbon dioxide from sorbents, which can be both energy-intensive and expensive. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new Rice reactor offers an alternative by efficiently splitting carbonate and bicarbonate solutions, producing alkaline absorbent in one chamber and high-purity carbon dioxide in another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOne of the major draws of this technology is its flexibility,\u201d added Wang. \u201cHydrogen coproduction during direct air capture could translate into dramatically lower capital and operation costs for downstream manufacturing of net-zero fuels or chemicals.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The importance of this technological advancement lies in its potential to decrease carbon emissions on an industrial scale, paving the way for more sustainable industrial processes.
