This pioneering method could revolutionize early disease detection, allowing for timely treatment with non-invasive procedures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Study and Findings<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The study, <a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/clinchem\/advance-article\/doi\/10.1093\/clinchem\/hvae137\/7816226\" title=\"\">published <\/a>in Clinical Chemistry, involved collecting urine samples from two groups: healthy individuals and those with kidney stones. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The researchers isolated two types of RNA \u2014 cell-free RNA and sediment RNA \u2014 from the samples. By sequencing and analyzing the RNA, they identified patterns indicative of disease.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Joseph Buonomo, assistant professor of chemistry at UTA and co-author of the study, highlighted the significance of this research. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe current gold standard for detecting many GU ailments is a biopsy where small tissue is removed during a rectal exam and sent to the lab for analysis. The invasive nature of the test can scare some people from getting the care they need,\u201d he said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uta.edu\/news\/news-releases\/2024\/10\/23\/new-research-shows-urine-tests-may-detect-early-diseases\" title=\"\">news release<\/a>. \u201cOur preliminary research shows that studying the RNA found in urine can detect some ailments in their earliest stages where they are easily \u2014 and cost effectively \u2014 managed.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Implications for Medical Diagnostics<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ability to detect diseases early through urine analysis presents a significant advancement in medical diagnostics. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Traditional methods for diagnosing genitourinary (GU) tract issues, such as blood tests and imaging, often require invasive procedures like biopsies, which can deter patients from seeking necessary medical care.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe\u2019re excited about this new research as it may lead to new, easier screening tools that can help detect diseases of the bladder, kidneys and prostate,\u201d Buonomo added. \u201cAlthough our patient cohort was small, it lays the groundwork for development of a type of \u2018non-invasive liquid biopsy\u2019 that will be used to track the progression of ailments like kidney stones, diabetes and cancer using urine instead of surgical specimens.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Future of Urine Analysis<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Looking forward, the research team is working on integrating advanced machine learning techniques to refine the detection of RNA and protein signatures in urine.
