The move, building on a program the company launched in May 2025, represents a structural shift in how Anthropic is distributing AI access to the research community — moving beyond individual applications toward established institutional pipelines.

The 20 new partners are organized into three tiers. The first group consists of science funders and societies — organizations like the U.S. National Science Foundation, the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation and the Simons Foundation — that will redistribute credits to researchers in their networks. The NSF alone accounts for roughly 25% of all federal funding for basic research at U.S. colleges and universities and manages a $9 billion annual budget. The second tier includes research institutions such as the Wellcome Sanger Institute, the Francis Crick Institute, EMBL and Imperial College London’s Department of Life Sciences, which will use credits internally. The third tier covers specific research initiatives receiving credits directly, including gnomAD at the Broad Institute, FlyWire at Princeton University and LEAP at Columbia University.

Anthropic says the program has already supported hundreds of projects across biology, medicine, physics, chemistry, climate science and mathematics since its launch. Researchers have been using Claude to generate hypotheses, design experiments, analyze complex datasets and communicate findings.

Two earlier collaborations illustrate the ambitions here. Anthropic and HHMI Janelia Research Campus co-developed the Model Hardware Standard, a shared specification that lets AI agents safely control lab instruments; it is currently in research preview. Separately, the Allen Institute is deploying teams of AI agents to analyze large open datasets on the brain, cells and the immune system — work the company says compresses months of manual analysis into hours.

Anthropic also emphasized that many of these collaborations are expected to generate public goods: open datasets, open-source software, open standards and shared libraries available to the broader scientific community, not just program participants.

A Crowded Race to Equip Researchers

Anthropic is not alone in courting the scientific research community. OpenAI has announced a program offering free access to its models for up to 100,000 scientists, mathematicians and engineers at select academic institutions, framing it as part of a commitment of more than $250 million through 2027. Google DeepMind and Google Cloud, meanwhile, are providing up to 200 top European researchers with direct access to frontier models and $3 million in compute credits, including tools like AlphaFold 3 and AlphaGenome.

Anthropic’s approach differs in two notable ways. By routing credits through established intermediaries — the NSF, Sloan, Simons — rather than relying solely on a direct application portal, Anthropic reduces friction for researchers already embedded in those funding ecosystems. The program also explicitly lists open data and open-source software production as goals, a public-goods framing less prominent in competing announcements.

What This Means for Students and Early-Career Researchers

For grad students and postdocs, the institutional architecture of this expansion matters practically. A student working on an NSF-funded project, a postdoc at the Francis Crick Institute, or an undergrad contributing to a project like FlyWire or gnomAD could gain access to Claude credits through their principal investigator or institution — without filing a separate application to Anthropic. That indirect pathway is new and could significantly broaden who actually uses the program.

For context on what that access could mean: the Allen Institute has reported that a computational literature review that once took a research team as long as two years can now be completed far more rapidly with AI assistance. Familiarity with Claude for hypothesis generation, experimental design and data analysis is becoming a practical differentiator for anyone pursuing a science-track career.

Researchers not yet affiliated with a partner institution can still apply individually for up to $50,000 in credits per project — the program is open to any researcher. For students outside research settings entirely, the most accessible free frontier-AI option remains Google’s AI Pro offering, which gives verified U.S. college students up to 12 months of Gemini Pro-level access at no cost. Neither Claude Pro nor ChatGPT Plus currently offers a public student discount.

Anthropic says many of these partnerships are still in early stages and plans to share impact results as the work matures. For now, the clearest signal is that AI access for scientific research is becoming an institutional infrastructure question as much as an individual one — and knowing which side of that infrastructure you’re on matters.

Source: Anthropic

<details class="research-citations">

Additional research sources

https://cellcog.ai/blog/anthropic-ai-for-science-expansion/

https://www.unite.ai/anthropic-opens-10000-free-and-discounted-claude-seats-for-scientists/

https://blockchain.news/news/anthropic-expands-ai-for-science-program-institutions-foundations

https://explainx.ai/blog/anthropic-ai-for-science-expands-20-foundations-institutions-claude-credits-2026

https://krater.ai/blog/ai-student-discounts-2026

https://www.engadget.com/2226656/openai-will-provide-free-ai-models-to-select-researchers/

</details>

Anthropic has expanded its AI for Science program to include 20 scientific foundations, institutions and research projects worldwide.
