METR can publish its findings without Anthropic’s sign-off, making the arrangement one of the most binding external review commitments any major AI lab has publicly disclosed.

The move formalizes a concept that has circulated in AI safety circles for years: that independent oversight of frontier AI should function less like a one-time audit and more like the resident bank examiner model, where regulators work inside financial institutions on a continuous basis. Anthropic cited its signing of the White House Accord on Super Intelligence — a voluntary pledge for AI companies to partner with external auditors — as one driver of the commitment.

Anthropic’s arrangement with METR is the most developed of several evaluator partnerships the company is now disclosing. The company has structured these relationships into three access tiers. In the first tier, Anthropic controls what information evaluators see and must approve any publications. The second tier allows evaluators to publish independently, with Anthropic retaining the ability to require redactions only in narrow, predefined categories. The third tier — where METR currently sits — adds embedded, employee-level access on top of those publication rights.

Anthropic retains a limited redaction authority even with METR: categories like customer data, attorney-client privileged material and model architecture details can be withheld. Crucially, METR is permitted to publicly describe any redactions Anthropic imposes and to say whether it believes those redactions were warranted — a transparency mechanism that goes further than most voluntary industry commitments.

Other named evaluator partners include SecureBio, which is currently reviewing the chemical and biological weapons chapter of Anthropic’s August Risk Report after completing a pilot review of an earlier report; Accenture and Faculty, with whom Anthropic is working toward red-teaming, alignment assessments and model safeguard testing; and Hugging Face, which is in early discussions. Partners in earlier tiers have more limited access and publication rights as Anthropic assesses whether they have the expertise and security practices to handle sensitive information.

Where This Fits in the Broader Industry Landscape

Anthropic’s announcement stands out because it is specific. OpenAI, Google DeepMind and Anthropic have reportedly held private discussions about shared AI safety standards and third-party evaluation, but only Anthropic has published a formal, tiered structure with defined contractual publication rights. Meta, xAI and Google DeepMind have not announced plans to embed third-party evaluators. OpenAI has expressed public support for the concept but has not announced finalized evaluator contracts.

The gap this is meant to address is real and well-documented. A December 2025 academic review of frontier AI safety frameworks found that seven major providers — including OpenAI, Meta, Amazon and others — scored zero on internal audit measures. Critics have long argued that safety frameworks published by AI companies lack independent verification, quantitative thresholds and any meaningful external accountability. Anthropic’s structure, if it holds, directly targets that gap: METR’s findings will reflect what the evaluators actually saw inside the company, not what the company chose to share.

METR has previously published evaluations of models including OpenAI’s GPT-5 and o3, giving it baseline credibility as an independent actor. Its prior collaboration with Anthropic on several Risk Report reviews — before this embedded arrangement — suggests the working relationship has been tested before being formalized.

What This Means If You’re Building a Career in AI

For students and recent graduates, the more immediately relevant signal in this announcement is that AI safety evaluation is becoming a profession with institutional infrastructure, not just an academic subspecialty. The creation of formal, contractual evaluator roles at organizations like METR, SecureBio and Accenture means there is a growing hiring pipeline for people with backgrounds in AI, policy, biosecurity or software security.

The salary data reflects that demand is real. AI safety evaluators currently command salaries ranging from $120,000 to $180,000, with employers spanning dedicated safety nonprofits, frontier labs and consulting firms. A PhD is valuable for core research roles but is not a requirement across the board — red teaming, safety engineering, governance and applied research roles frequently hire on demonstrated competency. Faculty, one of Anthropic’s named partners on red-teaming and alignment assessments, is actively listing associate roles on its AI safety team for work supporting frontier model evaluations and responsible AI projects for government and industry clients.

The regulatory backdrop adds a longer-term tailwind. The 2025–2026 state legislative cycle has included 16 bills focused on third-party AI assessment. If even a fraction of those pass, independent evaluation roles could shift from voluntary industry practice to legal requirement — which would dramatically expand the market for this kind of work.

Anthropic closes its announcement with a direct challenge to peers: the company says it is embedding evaluators voluntarily and that it believes every frontier AI lab should do the same. Whether that pressure translates into similar commitments from competitors will be worth watching in the months ahead.

Source: Anthropic

<details class="research-citations">

Additional research sources

https://metr.org/

https://techcrunch.com/2026/09/16/anthropic-and-openai-want-to-embed-safety-evaluators-will-they-really-be-independent/

https://www.cnbc.com/2026/10/11/ais-quiet-safety-gatekeepers-are-stepping-into-the-spotlight.html

https://www.cnbc.com/2026/09/18/ai-safety-evaluators-anthropic-openai-models-security.html

https://www.androidheadlines.com/2026/09/big-tech-ai-rivals-team-up-for-safety-pact.html

https://futureoflife.org/ai-safety-index-summer-2026/

</details>

Anthropic has given a team from AI safety nonprofit METR the same internal access as its own risk assessors, with the right to publish findings without company approval.
