The effort launches with two concrete programs: the Critical Infrastructure Defense Program (CIDP), aimed at power grids, water utilities and transportation networks, and OSS Scanner, a free service that runs AI-powered vulnerability scans on open-source software projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The announcement comes at a moment the company frames as acutely dangerous. Frontier AI models that can identify and exploit software vulnerabilities are now widely available, but the tools and resources available to defenders have not kept pace. State-sponsored actors have spent years quietly embedding themselves in critical systems across multiple sectors. Meanwhile, the maintainers of the open-source code that most commercial software is built on are often small volunteer teams with little capacity for dedicated security work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What the Two Programs Actually Do<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The CIDP works through a roster of 11 founding enterprise partners \u2014 Accenture, Booz Allen, CrowdStrike, Deloitte, Dragos, Hitachi, Insane Cyber, Nozomi Networks, Palo Alto Networks, PwC and Rockwell Automation \u2014 to reach the operators of so-called operational technology (OT). OT systems are the industrial controllers and networks behind physical infrastructure. They are built to run for decades, often cannot be taken offline for patching, and require specialized expertise to modify safely. The CIDP brings Claude models, Anthropic engineers and threat research directly to the security providers those operators already trust. Several partners are already using Claude to identify and fix vulnerabilities, according to the company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">OSS Scanner is structurally different and considerably more accessible. Modeled explicitly on Google&#8217;s OSS-Fuzz \u2014 the fuzzing system Google has used to help open-source maintainers find and fix more than 11,000 vulnerabilities since 2016 \u2014 OSS Scanner uses large language model reasoning rather than fuzzing to surface bugs. Enrolled projects receive periodic scans from Anthropic&#8217;s most capable models at no cost. Each report includes a proof-of-concept showing how a bug could be exploited, an explanation of the flaw and a suggested fix when one is available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is an important caveat: reports are sent without human review. Anthropic expects a true-positive rate above 90%, but acknowledges that some reports will contain inaccuracies, including wrong severity ratings. The company says the trade-off is speed \u2014 maintainers get findings faster \u2014 and it plans to improve accuracy over time. Projects without the capacity to work through unreviewed findings can still receive human-verified disclosures through Anthropic&#8217;s coordinated vulnerability disclosure process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Highly cyber-capable AI models are widely available to attackers now. But defensive tools \u2014 including our own \u2014 have not yet reached enough of the defenders who need them,&#8221; wrote Anthropic.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">OSS Scanner is funded through the Defender Advantage Fund (0xDAF), which Anthropic launched in August 2026. The company has also directly funded several open-source foundations, including the Python Software Foundation, the Apache Software Foundation, Alpha-Omega and OpenSSF through the Linux Foundation. Enrollment in OSS Scanner is done by submitting a pull request to Anthropic&#8217;s public <code>oss-scanner<\/code> GitHub repository; eligible projects are established ones with critical impact on infrastructure or user security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How This Fits the Competitive Landscape<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Google&#8217;s OSS-Fuzz is the closest predecessor to OSS Scanner, and Anthropic acknowledges the comparison directly. The key methodological difference is that OSS-Fuzz feeds malformed inputs to software to trigger crashes \u2014 a technique called fuzzing \u2014 while OSS Scanner uses LLM reasoning to read code, identify vulnerabilities and generate both an exploit proof of concept and a proposed patch. LLM-based scanning can surface certain classes of logic errors that fuzzing misses, but it also introduces the acknowledged false-positive risk that fuzzing, by its nature, largely avoids.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One structural wrinkle flagged by security analysts: because OSS Scanner reports go directly to maintainers without public disclosure or CVE assignments, a security fix can land in a library without any public advisory. Teams relying on software composition analysis tools to track which libraries they use and which vulnerabilities affect them may have no visibility into fixes that originated from OSS Scanner. Anthropic&#8217;s design choice protects maintainers from being overwhelmed, but it creates a potential blind spot for downstream users.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The CIDP also builds on earlier work. In June 2026, Anthropic launched a separate cyber defense program for state, local, tribal and territorial governments. Since then, it has extended frontier Claude access and technical support to more than half of all U.S. states and some of the largest public critical infrastructure operators in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why This Matters If You&#8217;re Entering the Field<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For students who maintain or contribute to qualifying open-source projects, OSS Scanner is a direct, low-barrier opportunity. Enrolling a project means working through real AI-generated vulnerability reports \u2014 triaging findings, assessing severity, verifying exploitability and shipping fixes. That workflow is exactly the kind of hands-on security experience that translates directly to a r\u00e9sum\u00e9 and to the daily work of a security engineer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The broader signal matters too. A 2026 ISSA\/Omdia survey found 83% of organizations are already using or planning to adopt AI for cybersecurity, while three out of four of those organizations report a skills gap. Employers are not waiting for staff who can work alongside AI tools; they need them now.
