Large language models can gorge on the entire internet. Robots have to learn by doing — and doing in the real world is slow, expensive, dangerous and occasionally destructive. That fundamental data problem is why simulation has moved from a niche debugging tool to the center of how physical AI systems are built.

A new technical overview published by Nvidia on HuggingFace lays out the current state of that infrastructure — and buried inside it are several announcements with real implications for anyone studying robotics, machine learning or software engineering.

The Three-Computer Paradigm

Nvidia’s framework for thinking about physical AI splits the work across three distinct systems: a large GPU cluster for training foundation models, a simulation computer for generating synthetic robot experience at scale, and an on-robot edge device — such as the Nvidia Jetson AGX Thor — that runs the trained policy in the real world. The insight here isn’t novel, but naming it clearly matters: it means the simulation environment is now a first-class piece of infrastructure, not an afterthought.

The reason simulation has become so central is straightforward. Collecting real-world robot training data — what happens when a gripper contacts an object at the wrong angle, or a cable bends unexpectedly — is impractical to do at the volumes modern AI training demands. GPU-accelerated simulation lets developers run thousands of parallel robot environments simultaneously, compressing what would take months of physical trials into hours of compute time.

What’s Actually New: Newton and Isaac Lab 3.0

The most significant piece of new infrastructure is Newton, an open-source, GPU-accelerated, differentiable physics engine co-developed by Nvidia, Google DeepMind and Disney Research, and now governed by the Linux Foundation. Newton is built on Nvidia Warp and OpenUSD, and it supports an unusually broad range of physics: seven solver implementations covering rigid bodies, soft bodies, cloth, particles and continuum materials like sand or dough. That breadth is what sets it apart from more specialized predecessors.

Newton’s governance structure matters as much as its technical specs. Placing it under the Linux Foundation means it’s designed to be vendor-neutral from day one — a shared physics layer that other tools can build on, rather than a proprietary Nvidia platform. The engine was first announced at Nvidia’s GTC 2025 in March and formally contributed to the Linux Foundation on September 29, 2025.

The other notable change is in Isaac Lab 3.0, which has been architecturally decoupled from Isaac Sim and the broader Omniverse platform. Previously, running Isaac Lab required Nvidia”s full Omniverse stack — a significant hardware and software dependency. Now, developers can choose between two backends: Isaac Sim with PhysX and RTX rendering for photorealistic, sensor-rich workflows, or a lightweight headless Newton physics backend for high-throughput reinforcement learning. That decoupling meaningfully lowers the barrier to entry.

A Competitive Landscape With No Single Winner

The honest picture of robotics simulation is that no single tool dominates every use case, and that’s unlikely to change. MuJoCo — the contact-physics engine maintained by Google DeepMind under Apache 2.0 — remains the gold standard for contact-rich manipulation tasks like grasping and tool use, where physical accuracy is more important than visual realism. Isaac Lab, with photorealistic RTX rendering, tends to dominate locomotion research and visual sim-to-real transfer work. A common pattern at leading labs is to use both, depending on the task.

A newer entrant, Genesis, claims 10 to 80 times faster simulation than Isaac Sim and MuJoCo on equivalent workloads — though those numbers carry important caveats about scene complexity. And Google DeepMind’s MuJoCo Playground, which runs entirely on GPU via MJX and can train locomotion policies in minutes on a single GPU instead of hours, won Outstanding Demo Paper at RSS 2025, signaling that the fast-iteration RL niche is fiercely contested.

Newton’s arrival doesn’t replace any of these. It positions itself as a shared foundation — and the fact that MuJoCo Warp (MJWarp), the GPU-accelerated CUDA reimplementation of MuJoCo, is integrated as a primary Newton solver suggests that the lines between these ecosystems are blurring by design.

Why This Matters If You’re a Student or Career Changer

The timing of these releases aligns with a job market moving very fast. Open physical AI roles tracked by physicalai.jobs jumped from three postings in July 2025 to over 1,100 by June 2026. Robotics software engineers in the United States now command salaries in the $158,000–$182,000 range, and hiring managers specifically cite digital twin and simulation expertise as a differentiating qualification. Importantly, many companies are actively recruiting strong adjacent talent — software engineers, ML practitioners, and even physics graduates — and offering training paths into robotics without requiring a traditional robotics degree.

The tooling has never been more accessible. Isaac Sim went open-source under Apache 2.0 in 2025. MuJoCo has long been free. Newton is open-source from day one. A student with a capable GPU can build a portfolio using the exact tools that industry teams rely on. A practical on-ramp: start with MuJoCo, which runs comfortably on a laptop and is widely used in academic research, then move to Isaac Lab 3.0 — which, thanks to the Newton backend, no longer requires the full Omniverse hardware stack to get started.

The broader takeaway is that simulation literacy is becoming as foundational for robotics careers as knowing PyTorch is for general ML. The infrastructure being built now — Newton, Isaac Lab 3.0, MJWarp — is the substrate on which the next decade of physical AI will be trained. Getting familiar with it early is not a niche specialization. It’s table stakes.

Source: “The State of Simulation for Physical AI: An Overview,” published by Nvidia on Hugging Face

<details class="research-citations">

Additional research sources

https://www.linuxfoundation.org/press/linux-foundation-announces-contribution-of-newton-by-disney-research-google-deepmind-and-nvidia-to-accelerate-open-robot-learning

https://www.maginative.com/article/nvidia-google-deepmind-and-disney-research-team-up-for-open-source-physics-engine/

https://careersinrobotics.com/guides/robot-simulation-software

https://www.morningstar.com/news/pr-newswire/20250929dc85217/linux-foundation-announces-contribution-of-newton-by-disney-research-google-deepmind-and-nvidia-to-accelerate-open-robot-learning

https://www.roboticscenter.ai/rl-environments/mujoco-vs-isaac-sim

https://www.spheron.network/blog/deploy-genesis-physics-engine-gpu-cloud-robot-simulation/

</details>

Simulation has quietly become the backbone of robotics AI — and a new open-source physics engine called Newton, plus a revamped Isaac Lab 3.0, are making the tools more accessible than ever.
