Federal research funding is tightening: the number of R01-equivalent NIH investigators dropped from roughly 7,720 in 2024 to 5,885 in 2025, with further cuts expected. Track two targets early-stage biotechs trying to compress drug development timelines. Currently, moving from a confirmed genetic diagnosis to a treatment available to patients takes one to two years \u2014 with much of that time lost to manufacturing queues, sequential safety studies, and assembling the regulatory documentation required for in-patient testing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A key infrastructure partner for track one is the Monarch Initiative, an international consortium that has built shared standards for rare disease data, including the <a href=\"http:\/\/mondo.monarchinitiative.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Mondo Disease Ontology<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/monarchinitiative.org\/kg\/about\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Monarch Knowledge Graph<\/a>. Its newest tool, <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/monarch-initiative\/dismech\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">DisMech<\/a>, is described as an &#8220;agent-friendly mechanistic disease classification library&#8221; \u2014 essentially a resource that lets a model like Claude read case reports, variant databases, and registry data, then surface mechanistic similarities between diseases at scale. Track one grantees are invited to use and contribute to DisMech, and outputs from that track will be made publicly available at monarchinitiative.org, an open-science requirement that distinguishes this from a standard corporate partnership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Existing AI for Science grantees offer a preview of what track two work looks like in practice. <a href=\"https:\/\/everycure.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Every Cure<\/a> is using Claude to identify drug repurposing opportunities across millions of candidates. The <a href=\"https:\/\/populationgenomics.org.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Centre for Population Genomics<\/a> \u2014 a collaboration between the Garvan Institute and the Murdoch Children&#8217;s Research Institute \u2014 is building a Claude-based system that drafts variant classifications for expert review, one of the biggest bottlenecks in diagnosing rare genetic conditions. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.violetresearch.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Violet Research Institute<\/a>, a nonprofit focused on ultra-rare diseases affecting fewer than 1 in 50,000 births, uses Claude to navigate FDA guidelines, run bioinformatics pipelines, and draft regulatory filings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How it compares to other funding options<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The competitive landscape for AI research funding is crowded but uneven. OpenAI&#8217;s Researcher Access Program offers up to $1,000 in API credits over 12 months, focused on AI safety and societal impact rather than domain-specific biology \u2014 making Anthropic&#8217;s rare disease grant roughly 50 times larger in credit value and far narrower in scope. NIH and NSF joint programs like Smart Health can award up to $1.2 million per project, but require interdisciplinary institutional teams, operate on slow annual cycles, and are effectively inaccessible to pre-seed startups or individual graduate researchers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This rare disease call is also the first AI for Science grant to offer credits at this level \u2014 approximately 2.5 times more than Anthropic&#8217;s original program. That makes it viable for graduate students, independent researchers, and founders of early-stage biotech companies in a way that NIH mechanisms simply are not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The grant is structured as compute access rather than cash \u2014 the theory being that for many research teams today, the binding constraint isn&#8217;t payroll but the cost of running experiments at frontier-model scale. For a grad student who has lab infrastructure or university compute but can&#8217;t absorb API costs at research volume, $50,000 in Claude credits over six months is a real unlock. For a recent graduate trying to start a rare disease company, the specific use cases Anthropic highlights \u2014 drafting regulatory dossiers, analyzing drug target druggability, identifying shared mechanisms across therapies to enable basket trial designs \u2014 map directly to the bottlenecks that stop pre-seed biotechs from advancing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The rare disease grant should also be understood in the context of Anthropic&#8217;s broader life sciences push.
