The update ships as part of vLLM v0.25.0, which includes 558 commits from 232 contributors, and it targets one of the most persistent friction points in open-source AI deployment: the lag between a model’s release and the moment it can be served at full production speed.

Until now, getting maximum inference performance from vLLM meant either waiting for the community to write a custom port of a new model architecture — a process that could take weeks after a major release — or writing one yourself. Standard
transformers
implementations lacked the internal hooks required for vLLM’s specialized kernels, including tensor-parallel sharding and fused attention layers. The new update eliminates that bottleneck entirely for compatible architectures.

What Actually Changed Under the Hood

The updated backend uses
torch.fx
to perform static analysis on a model’s computation graph, scanning for known patterns that can be optimized. Once those patterns are identified, an abstract syntax tree (AST) manipulation step rewrites operations in place — applying inference-specific layer fusions at runtime rather than requiring them to be baked into a custom implementation. The result is that models defined in
transformers
now get access to the same fused kernels, expert parallelism, tensor-parallel plans, and CUDA graph compilation paths that previously required a dedicated vLLM port.

Hugging Face benchmarked the updated backend head-to-head against vLLM’s native implementations across three very different Qwen3 models: a 4B-parameter dense model on a single GPU, a 32B-parameter dense model using tensor parallelism, and a 235B-parameter FP8 Mixture-of-Experts model running on an 8×H100 node with data and expert parallelism. In all three configurations, the
transformers
backend after the update matched native vLLM performance. The benchmark scripts are publicly available for anyone who wants to reproduce the results.

To use the feature, developers upgrade vLLM and add a single flag to their serving command:
--model-impl transformers
. The full install command is
uv pip install --upgrade vllm --torch-backend auto
. No other changes to a serving setup are required. Models that use linear attention are not yet supported, and custom models hosted in Hub repositories may not work if they weren’t written to comply with the expected structure — but standard architectures across the library’s 450+ supported models are fair game.

Where This Fits in a Crowded Inference Market

The inference engine market has gotten competitive fast. vLLM, SGLang and Nvidia’s TensorRT-LLM have all converged on similar surface-level features — continuous batching, paged KV caching, FP8 quantization — and raw throughput differences between them are narrowing. On smaller models in the 7B–8B range, SGLang currently shows roughly 29% higher throughput on H100 hardware; on 70B-plus models, that gap shrinks to 3–5%. In that environment, ecosystem convenience and integration depth matter more than ever.

Hugging Face’s move is strategically pointed: the main reason developers have historically bypassed
transformers
for production serving was pure performance. By closing that gap, Hugging Face is making a case that the same codebase used for training, evaluation, and reinforcement learning rollouts can now handle production inference without penalty. One code path, one mental model, no switching cost.

Why Students and Early-Career Developers Should Pay Attention

The
transformers
library is already the most widely taught ML library in university courses and online curricula. Students who know it well have, until this week, faced a real skills gap when moving from a research prototype to anything resembling production deployment. Closing that gap required either learning vLLM’s internal model API — a non-trivial investment — or accepting slower inference speeds for demos and capstone projects.

That trade-off is now considerably smaller. A student who can load and fine-tune a model in
transformers
can serve it at near-native vLLM speed with a one-line flag change. For portfolio projects, research experiments, or anything that needs to run fast enough to demo convincingly, that’s a meaningful practical difference. The unified training-and-inference code path also means end-to-end pipelines — including RL-based fine-tuning workflows — no longer require maintaining two separate codebases.

For anyone eyeing ML engineering or AI infrastructure roles, familiarity with this integrated stack is increasingly a baseline expectation. The ability to go from a
transformers
model definition to a high-throughput serving endpoint — without a custom port in between — is exactly the kind of workflow that separates candidates who understand the full production stack from those who only know the research half of it.

Source: Hugging Face

<details class="research-citations">

Additional research sources

https://odsc.medium.com/vllm-transformers-backend-bridging-hugging-face-compatibility-and-high-performance-inference-b7ef0d39f005

https://x.com/vllm_project/status/2076217859928453275

https://techsy.io/en/blog/vllm-vs-sglang

https://docs.vllm.ai/en/v0.6.3/models/adding_model.html

https://www.yottalabs.ai/post/vllm-vs-sglang-which-inference-engine-should-you-use-in-2026

</details>

HuggingFace has closed the performance gap between its transformers library and hand-written vLLM implementations.
