The announcement marks the first time Google’s production on-device inference stack — the same runtime powering AI features across Android and iOS devices — has been made directly available to web developers.

The architectural shift is the core of the story. Previous browser AI libraries, including Google’s own TensorFlow.js, executed models through JavaScript-based compute kernels. LiteRT.js routes that work through a native, highly optimized runtime exposed to the browser via WebAssembly, enabling hardware acceleration that wasn’t previously accessible on the web. On the CPU side it uses XNNPACK; for GPU it uses ML Drift via WebGPU; and for neural processing units it targets the emerging WebNN API, currently experimental in Chrome and Edge.

In benchmarks run on an M4-based MacBook Pro, Google found LiteRT.js outperformed other web inference runtimes by up to three times on computer vision and audio processing models. Switching from CPU to GPU or NPU execution within LiteRT.js itself produced an additional 5x to 60x speedup for demanding real-time workloads like object tracking and audio transcription.

The initial release ships as an npm package and includes live demos that show what those numbers look like in practice: real-time object detection using YOLO models from computer vision company Ultralytics, monocular depth estimation that converts a standard webcam feed into an interactive 3D point cloud using the Depth-Anything-V2 model, and 4x in-browser image upscaling via Real-ESRGAN that processes 128×128 pixel patches and reassembles them into 512×512 output.

How It Stacks Up Against Existing Options

LiteRT.js enters a browser AI space that already has legitimate competitors. Hugging Face’s Transformers.js runs ONNX models in the browser and gives developers easy access to hundreds of pretrained architectures — DistilBERT, Whisper, T5 and others — already available on the Hugging Face Hub. ONNX Runtime Web targets developers who need maximum control over custom-trained models. All three competing libraries are free and npm-installable, just like LiteRT.js.

LiteRT.js’s clearest differentiator is provenance and the conversion pipeline. PyTorch models can be converted to
.tflite
format in a single step using LiteRT Torch, collapsing what was previously a multi-step chain through ONNX and TensorFlow. Models from TensorFlow and JAX are also supported. The tradeoff is ecosystem: the ONNX and Hugging Face Hub model libraries are currently much larger than the
.tflite
ecosystem, so developers working with less common architectures may find more ready-to-use options with Transformers.js today.

Google also previewed LiteRT-LM.js, a companion library aimed at running large language models in the browser, putting it in direct competition with WebLLM, which already offers WebGPU-accelerated in-browser LLM inference with benchmarks showing performance approaching native speeds on some tasks.

What This Means for Students Building AI Projects

The practical implications for student developers are significant. Running an AI model in a web app previously meant one of two things: paying for a cloud inference API every time a user made a request, or standing up a backend server to host the model yourself. Both options add cost and complexity that can kill a side project before it ships.

LiteRT.js changes that equation. Once a model is downloaded to the browser, all inference runs locally on the user’s hardware — meaning zero per-inference cost, offline support, and no backend to maintain. A static site hosted on GitHub Pages or Vercel is sufficient. There’s no API key to manage, no Docker container to debug, and no server bill waiting at the end of the month.

For students working in computer vision specifically, the official YOLO integration through Ultralytics is notable. YOLO models are among the most recognizable and deployable architectures in the field, and having a documented, first-party path from Python training to browser deployment — with no intermediate conversion headaches — meaningfully lowers the barrier to building something demonstrable.

For anyone preparing a portfolio or job search, that deployability matters in concrete terms. A recruiter or hiring manager can click a link to a GitHub Pages project and watch real-time object detection run in their browser tab, with no setup required on their end. That’s a more direct demonstration of on-device ML competence than a Colab notebook or a private model checkpoint, and it’s a skill set increasingly mentioned in ML engineer and front-end AI job descriptions.

What’s Next

Google has indicated its near-term roadmap focuses on deeper WebNN integration for native NPU performance and optimized support for on-device generative AI through LiteRT-LM.js. How quickly the
.tflite
ecosystem catches up to the breadth of ONNX model availability will likely determine how broadly LiteRT.js is adopted beyond developers already working within Google’s toolchain.

The npm package, documentation and demo source code are available now via the LiteRT.js announcement on Google’s developer blog and the LiteRT GitHub repository.

Source: Google AI

<details class="research-citations">

Additional research sources

https://vucense.com/dev-corner/litert-js-google-web-ai-inference-2026/

https://www.c-sharpcorner.com/news/google-launches-ai-inference-litertjs

https://gigazine.net/gsc_news/en/20260710-google-litert-js/

https://daily.dev/posts/google-launches-ai-inference-litert-js–golcrppmb

https://www.neowin.net/news/google-launches-litertjs-to-make-ai-and-ml-workloads-faster-in-the-browser/

</details>

Google has released LiteRT.js, a JavaScript binding of its LiteRT runtime that executes AI models directly in the browser — no cloud calls, no API bills, no data leaving the device.
