Now, a sweeping new study <a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/10.1126\/science.aec9773\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">published<\/a> in the journal <em>Science<\/em> is rewriting that narrative. Researchers at Tulane University analyzed 40 years of satellite imagery and found that mangrove forests worldwide have stopped declining on a net basis \u2014 and are, in fact, growing overall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The study documents how heavy losses driven by deforestation and coastal development between the 1980s and 2010 have been nearly offset by natural regeneration and deliberate restoration. The cumulative result: a net decline of only about 1% across the entire four-decade span \u2014 far less than earlier estimates suggested.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAfter decades of loss, we\u2019re finally seeing a global turning point for mangroves,\u201d lead author Zhen Zhang, a postdoctoral scholar at Tulane University\u00a0School of Science and Engineering, said in a news release. \u201cThis highlights their strong resilience and their potential as a powerful nature-based solution for climate mitigation and coastal protection.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Senior author Daniel Friess, the Cochran Family Professor of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Tulane and director of The Mangrove Lab, echoed the optimism while urging caution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;What we&#8217;re seeing now is a real shift. Mangroves are now showing a net increase globally, and the rate of degradation is slowing,&#8221; Friess said in the news release.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Friess, who also serves as the director for the Center for Public Policy Research at the\u00a0Murphy Institute, added that the broader trajectory could signal something rare in conservation: &#8220;While some mangroves are still being lost, this could make them a rare conservation success story and an important source of optimism for climate action.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Is Driving the Recovery?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The rebound stems from a mix of deliberate policy and natural processes. In many parts of Asia and Latin America, mangroves are recolonizing abandoned shrimp and fish farming ponds and spreading across newly formed coastal mudflats \u2014 especially in river deltas where sediment runoff creates fertile ground for new growth. Conservation regulations and expanded restoration programs have also played a measurable role in slowing deforestation rates since the 1980s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Along the U.S. Gulf Coast, a distinct but related pattern is unfolding. In Louisiana&#8217;s Mississippi River Delta, mangrove area dipped slightly through the late 1990s before turning upward, with a more pronounced expansion after 2012. Scientists attribute much of this inland creep to rising temperatures, which are pushing the range of tropical and subtropical mangroves into higher-latitude regions that were once too cold to support them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The study also found that many established mangrove stands are not just growing in area \u2014 they are becoming structurally healthier. Dense, closed-canopy forests, which lock away more carbon and offer stronger storm buffering for coastlines, have expanded considerably over the past four decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why It Matters for Students and Young People<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mangroves punch well above their weight environmentally. These coastal forests protect shorelines from storm surges, support some of the most productive fisheries on the planet, and store enormous quantities of carbon in their roots and soils \u2014 making them a frontline tool in the fight against climate change. For a generation of students entering fields like environmental science, urban planning, international development, or policy, the mangrove rebound offers a concrete case study in what sustained conservation effort can achieve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Zhang stressed that protecting what has been regained requires vigilance on two fronts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;The most immediate and effective way to protect mangroves is to stop deforestation,&#8221; he said, explaining that cleared forests release long-stored carbon immediately, while intact forests keep accumulating it over time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Zhang also pointed to an under-appreciated infrastructure issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMuch of mangrove expansion happens on newly formed mudflats, which depend on a steady supply of river sediment,\u201d he added. \u201cMaintaining that sediment flow is critical for creating the conditions mangroves need to establish and spread.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Fragility Beneath the Good News<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The researchers are careful not to declare victory. Newly established mangrove stands tend to be young and structurally simple, lacking the ecological richness of mature forests. Texas offered a stark reminder of how quickly progress can unravel: mangrove coverage there expanded over recent decades, only to suffer a sharp contraction in 2021 after an extreme winter freeze event.
