Notably, they absorb storm surges and mitigate sea-level rise, thereby preventing inland flooding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;These marsh areas might be in someone&#8217;s backyard,&#8221; added senior author Jessica O\u2019Connell, a CSU professor and Runion\u2019s adviser. &#8220;It\u2019s important to have this early warning and a chance to do something before you lose these special landscapes that people have an economic or emotional connection to.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The researchers focused on the marsh grass <em>Spartina alterniflora<\/em>, prevalent along much of the U.S. coast. Analyzing an extensive field dataset from Georgia&#8217;s coastline, they found that belowground biomass has declined across 72% of Georgia\u2019s coastal marsh since 2014, with nearly 30% experiencing substantial loss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"> The team aims to adapt the model for universal application to all marsh plants and coastlines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:17px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" height=\"329\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tun.com\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Marsh-deterioration.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-26372\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Caption: <\/em>Declines in belowground biomass can indicate marsh vulnerability to loss.
