We are well aware that social media has the power to negatively impact our thoughts, emotions, and desires\u00a0\u2014 it can cloud our visions and perspectives, distorting our view of \u201creality\u201d; it can create false fears and magnify our insecurities, making FOMO a major driving force; it can make our attention span as short as our tolerance level.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>But living in the 21st century, it\u2019s almost impossible to avoid or abstain from social media completely.<\/strong> That\u2019s why \u201cquitting\u201d isn\u2019t the solution. Most of us can\u2019t do that, anyway.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">So the real question is, <strong>how do we ensure that we don\u2019t become enslaved or addicted to social media?<\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Because after all, social media is only as \u201charmful\u201d as we let it be&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><strong>\u27ab Proposal: slow down and &#8220;fast&#8221; social media.<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The <strong>frequency<\/strong> and the<strong> intensity<\/strong> of your social media use determines whether or not you are \u201caddicted\u201d to social media.<\/p>\n<p>So first, you have to check your status (no, not your FB status, but your social media consumption and use patterns).<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>Ask yourself these questions:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Do you check your Instagram or Facebook (or any other social media platform) excessively?<\/li>\n<li>Do you find yourself obsessing over how many \u201clikes\u201d you get and become agitated when you don\u2019t get enough?<\/li>\n<li>Do you equate the number of followers or friends on social media to popularity or likability?<\/li>\n<li>Do you feel envious or jealous when you see your friends\u2019 \u201cpicture-perfect\u201d lives on social media?<\/li>\n<li>Do you feel like you\u2019re always missing out or being left out of significant events?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>If you answered yes to all or most of these questions\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Here are some practical steps you can take to minimize your use of, and gradually detach yourself from, social media:<\/strong><\/p>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>[divider]<\/strong><\/h5>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>1. Find a hobby outside of the Internet world.<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Whether it\u2019s sports, arts, music, hanging out with friends, or discovering new restaurants, <b>find something that you can enjoy, OFF SCREEN<\/b>. Seriously, it\u2019s a whole lot better than scrolling through the same newsfeed 40 times a day.<\/p>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>[divider]<\/strong><\/h5>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>2. Don\u2019t live by the \u201cpic or it didn\u2019t happen\u201d motto\/mentality.<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>This mentality ruins the fun, really. Ironically (but too often), we miss out on fun moments because we are too busy trying to perfectly capture the \u201cfun\u201d moments. And the truth is, fond memories most often aren\u2019t \u201crecorded,\u201d nor do they have to be \u201cproven.\u201d<\/p>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>[divider]<\/strong><\/h5>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>3. Consider deleting some apps from your phone.<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Identify which social media platform(s) you spend the most time on, and if you feel that it has become an unhealthy obsession or a platform for procrastination, delete it from your phone. While FOMO is real, the truth is that you\u2019re probably not missing out on much. And ironically, FOMO is more apparent when you are on social media than when you aren\u2019t.<\/p>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>[divider]<\/strong><\/h5>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>4. Don\u2019t be afraid of solitude.<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Silence is good for your soul, even if you\u2019re an extrovert! The world is a loud place, and unless you deliberately set apart time to be alone (to reflect, meditate, or just to be still), your mind will always be occupied or enslaved by something. Don\u2019t shun solitude, but use it to recharge yourself\u2013aloneness does not equal loneliness!<\/p>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>[divider]<\/strong><\/h5>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>5. Make plans to see people face-to-face.<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Hiding behind the screens to communicate things that were intended for face-to-face is not only restricting, but quite frankly, cowardly.
