I mean, really, all it is is<i> a piece of paper<\/i> that the recruiters spend less than 10 seconds looking at!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">However, you and I both know all too well that it is essentially this piece of paper that gets you the call back <\/span>\u2014 <span style=\"color: #333333;\">or not. And that\u2019s why here I&nbsp;offer you tips on how to <em>maximize your chance <\/em>of getting noticed. Have <em>irrelevant<\/em> part-time jobs from high school listed.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Think about it<\/span>: does your SAT score or AP scores really matter once you\u2019re in college?&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"color: #333333;\">No.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Similarly, recruiters aren\u2019t interested in how many jobs you had in high school; they&nbsp;only want to know&nbsp;what&nbsp;<em>transferable<\/em> <i>skills <\/i>you have.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #333333;\">2. Have spelling errors, typos or incorrect grammar<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #333333;\">, <i>especially<\/i> if the position you are applying for requires <em>attentiveness to detail<\/em> (or you wrote somewhere on your resume or cover letter that you are \u201c<em>detail-oriented<\/em>\u201c).<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Check you didn\u2019t mix up \u201cpossess\u201d and \u201cposses,\u201d \u201cmadame\u201d and \u201cmadam,\u201d  \u201cmanager\u201d and \u201cmanger,\u201d etc. as auto-correct will not correct them!&nbsp;Typos and spelling errors are apparently the #1 pet peeve of hiring managers.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">\u2192 To avoid making these silly (yet all too common mistakes) you can try&nbsp;the following:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Have someone else <\/span>\u2014<span style=\"color: #333333;\"> <em>who is a stickler for grammar<\/em> \u2014 read over your resume.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Read it out loud\/from the bottom-up.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Print out a <em>physical copy and<\/em> <em>then<\/em> proofread it.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Allow some time before you pick it up again to proofread it one last time.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>3. Use third-person<\/strong> <\/span>\u2014 y<span style=\"color: #333333;\">ou should avoid using the word \u201cI\u201d (because it\u2019s already assumed that the subject is YOU) but you should all the more avoid using third person. If those experiences are YOUR experiences, why make them sound like they are someone else\u2019s?<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>4. Use silly or unprofessional email addresses<\/strong> <\/span>\u2014 <span style=\"color: #333333;\">that\u2019s just\u2026 unprofessional.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>5. Write a long objective<\/strong> <\/span>\u2014 <span style=\"color: #333333;\">ultimately, from the company\u2019s perspective, your objective is to get a job. Besides, the recruiters on average spend <i>3 seconds<\/i> looking at your resume, so it\u2019s likely that they\u2019re not even going to read your objective statement. Just get to the meat of it.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">[divider]<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><b>\u2666THOU SHALL\u2666<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>6. OPTIMIZE!<\/strong> <em>Use <a style=\"color: #333333;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.tun.com\/blog\/35-phrases-that-will-improve-your-resume-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">keywords<\/a><\/em> from the job posting <i>so that your resume makes it past the automated screening<\/i> (which is often the case with a lot of companies nowadays).<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>7. Tailor your resume<\/strong> to the<em> specific<\/em> <em>position<\/em> you are applying for <\/span>\u2014<span style=\"color: #333333;\"> don\u2019t give the impression that you\u2019re sending out this same resume to 20 other companies.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>8.<\/strong> <strong>Show personality<\/strong> (<i>especially <\/i>if you\u2019re applying for a creative position). You <i>are<\/i> allowed to be creative (just don\u2019t overdo it). After all, you want your resume to stand out, don\u2019t you? One suggestion is to make your name POP out\u2013 you can play around with the font, size, and color to make your name stand out from the page.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>9. Put your phone number<\/strong>, even if email is your preferred method of contact (and make sure you have a professional voicemail message set up). If the company is looking to hire immediately, they might call you instead of emailing you. If you don\u2019t pick up or return the call, it\u2019s your loss.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>10.<\/strong> <strong>Remember that space is limited.<\/strong> You cannot possibly tell your whole life story on a single piece of paper. That\u2019s why you highlight&nbsp;the important parts and save the <em>more in-depth explanations<\/em> for the interview. Your job at this point is to get them curious!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">[divider]<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Now, as for the formatting, here are some [sections] you might want to include in your resume:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Personal information (including education)<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Work Experiences (jobs + internships)<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><a style=\"color: #333333;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.tun.com\/blog\/5-myths-vs-truths-about-volunteering\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Volunteer Work<\/a> &amp; extracurricular activities<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Leadership Positions<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Skills + Accomplishments<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Personal Projects or Portfolios (links to published blogs&nbsp;&amp;&nbsp;articles, artwork, etc.)<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333;\">References (upon request)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">And finally, <strong>feel free to get creative with your resume<\/strong> if you are applying for a creative position!
