And <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/nsb\/sei\/one-pagers\/K-12-Indicator-2022.pdf\">large gaps<\/a> persist in student STEM achievement across racial, ethnic and socio-economic groups.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>EnCorps\u2019 mission is to redress inequities in STEM education by opening up access and opportunities to quality STEM education in low-income communities.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By joining EnCorps, volunteers can help students in need of STEM education support and make a meaningful difference in their lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How EnCorps Started<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>EnCorps was founded in 2007 by former Paramount Pictures CEO Sherry Lansing, who was a public school math teacher in her early career, and California\u2019s then-governor Schwarzenegger.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Their goal was to address two California education trends \u2013 falling student achievement in STEM subjects and a critical shortage of STEM teachers \u2013 by recruiting STEM professionals to teach in low-income communities as their second career.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And EnCorps has been remarkably successful in its recruiting efforts, counting former engineers from Boeing, Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman, technology professionals and computer scientists from Silicon Valley, research scientists, military service members and medical specialists in its team of educators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To date, more than 1,200 EnCorps tutors, guest teachers and full-time licensed teachers have served in more than 250 schools and organizations, with over 125,000 students across the country benefiting from Encorps\u2019 program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"EnCorps Partners &amp; Host Teachers\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/hZGsmpkJuCU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:23px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Volunteer as STEMx Tutor<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>College juniors, seniors and graduate students in STEM-focused majors are needed as volunteer STEMx Tutors. To qualify, volunteers must have a cumulative minimum GPA of 2.5, currently reside in the United States and be eligible to work in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Volunteers will provide academic assistance to middle school students in low-income communities who need STEM education support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>EnCorps currently has over 145 tutors for middle school students in need of math education support, but it is looking to broaden its network and continue its quest to tackle the inequity in STEM education.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a STEMx Tutor, volunteers are expected to commit to one-hour virtual tutoring sessions twice a week for two academic semesters.
