{"id":339,"date":"2016-01-27T22:28:48","date_gmt":"2016-01-28T03:28:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.tun.com\/blog\/?p=339"},"modified":"2019-03-04T14:31:34","modified_gmt":"2019-03-04T19:31:34","slug":"how-to-persuade-like-a-pro","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tun.com\/blog\/how-to-persuade-like-a-pro\/","title":{"rendered":"How to Persuade Just About Anyone (Persuasive Speech Presentation Criteria Included)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><strong>Presentations &#8212; you can\u2019t avoid them in college (or in your workplace, depending on your job).\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">If you&#8217;re an introvert or an internal processor like myself, or if you have a fear of public speaking like 75% of the population, you know the struggle is real.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\"><em>But fear not<\/em>&#8211;\u00a0while convincing others <em>is<\/em> hard work, it\u2019s definitely doable! <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong>Just keep the following 7 tips in mind as\u00a0you prepare for your presentation.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">+ Included at the bottom is a criteria\u00a0you can use to assess your own presentation\u00a0<em>before<\/em> anyone else\u00a0can. It&#8217;s a real criteria from\u00a0a\u00a0real\u00a0class I took as an undergrad. Thanks Prof. Aronson!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.tun.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/How-to-Persuade-Like-a-Pro.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-355\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-355 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.tun.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/How-to-Persuade-Like-a-Pro.png\" alt=\"How to Persuade Like a Pro\" width=\"800\" height=\"994\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">1. Know your audience.<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The whole point of a persuasive speech is to get your audience to agree with you. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But if you don&#8217;t know your audience, how on earth would you do that?<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do some research beforehand (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">maybe survey them<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and learn about their interests and where they stand in terms of the issue you are discussing. This will help you answer the following (crucial) questions:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What do they know or <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> know? Is explaining necessary? What\u2019s in it for them?<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong><span style=\"line-height: 1.5; color: #000000;\">2. Determine your objective.<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An objective should be <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">realistic<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">specific<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Have a clear<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> thesis<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and decide <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">when<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> you want to reveal it. The placement of your thesis is very important! You might want to reveal it right off the bat, or you might want to wait until <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">after<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> you&#8217;ve engaged them with a story that illustrates your main point or thesis.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong><span style=\"line-height: 1.5; color: #000000;\">3. Have a primary conclusion.<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ultimately, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">what is it that you are arguing for?<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> If you had to sum up your argument in one or two sentences, how would you do it? Try articulating your argument in 1 or 2 declarative sentences.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong><span style=\"line-height: 1.5; color: #000000;\">4. Develop your point as \u201cgood reasons.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">The old-fashioned three-point message always seems to work. But instead of just listing three bullet points, use illustrations and stories to explain WHY they are good reasons.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong><span style=\"line-height: 1.5; color: #000000;\">5. Define key terms.<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#8217;s best not to use jargon, but if you really have to, make sure you <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">define<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> those words or terms. If your audience doesn&#8217;t know what you&#8217;re talking about, you&#8217;ve pretty much lost it already.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong><span style=\"line-height: 1.5; color: #000000;\">6. Think about whether you want to mention the opposing side.<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does doing so undermine your points?<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> If so, don&#8217;t mention it! Some things are better left unsaid anyway.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong><span style=\"line-height: 1.5; color: #000000;\">7. Practice, practice, practice!<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After you&#8217;ve drafted your script, it\u2019s time to practice! <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gather a few friends or record<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">yourself giving the speech.<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be as critical as you can<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and use the below CRITERIA to assess your presentation.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pinterest.com\/pin\/69946600440851512\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-413 noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-413 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.tun.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/persuasive-speech-criteria.png\" alt=\"How to Persuade Like a Pro\" width=\"791\" height=\"1038\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Once you feel confident about the way you sound and the way your arguments flow, the only thing that&#8217;s left for you to do is to go up there and wow your audience!<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">P.S.- While you do want to sound <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">well-rehearsed<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you don\u2019t want to sound\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mechanic <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">robotic<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. When rehearsing, pay attention to your volume, pacing, and fluidity. Try to be <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">conversational<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (as if you are talking to a friend) as opposed to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">didactic<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (as if you were teaching a class).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">A simple exercise you can do is to raise your voice at the end of the sentences (as if you were asking a question) to sound more confident.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>That&#8217;s it!
