{"id":338,"date":"2016-01-28T19:26:37","date_gmt":"2016-01-29T00:26:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.tun.com\/blog\/?p=338"},"modified":"2019-03-04T15:14:49","modified_gmt":"2019-03-04T20:14:49","slug":"3-things-every-twentysomething-has-to-unlearn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tun.com\/blog\/3-things-every-twentysomething-has-to-unlearn\/","title":{"rendered":"3 Things That Society Teaches Us That We Have to UNlearn"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Real talk<\/span>: Society teaches us a lot of things that are toxic to the mind, body, and soul.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">And it takes our conscious effort to unlearn those unhealthy mindsets and ways of life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><strong>Here are 3 things society teaches us that we need to unlearn.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-28275\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tun.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Unlearn-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"376\" height=\"656\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">1. \u201cPlan, plan, plan ahead!\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Society teaches us not to be <em>efficient<\/em> with our time but to be <em>impatient<\/em> with ourselves. <\/span>When something doesn\u2019t go according to our plans (or according to the society\u2019s timetable), we become\u00a0agitated. We feel as though time is literally chasing us down a whirlwind.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #808080;\">\u201cI graduated from college two months ago\u00a0but I\u2019m still looking for a job.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #808080;\">\u201cI\u2019m turning 30 in 30 days and I\u2019m still single!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #808080;\">\u201cI\u2019ve been working here for two years but I\u2019m still not promoted.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>These things <em>kill<\/em> us inside.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">And this\u00a0<em>constant<\/em>\u00a0worrying\u2013 of what <em>might<\/em>\u00a0(or might <em>not<\/em>) happen in the future\u2013 makes us<span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong> <em>forget to live in the present<\/em><\/strong><\/span>. We become\u00a0<em>indifferent<\/em> and\u00a0<em>cold<\/em>\u00a0to our present selves. We\u2019re too focused on what\u2019s NOT happening that we forget to be thankful for what <em>IS<\/em> happening. And this vicious cycle of complaining soon becomes a lifestyle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><strong>What we need to do:\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Enjoy the now, embrace the uncertain, and expect the best.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Even if the present moment seems absolutely horrendous (and you just can\u2019t wait to get out of it), know that it is still a <em>precious<\/em> and <em>passing<\/em> time that will never come\u00a0again. So instead of trying to get<span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong><em> out<\/em><\/strong><\/span> of the situation, see what you can <span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong><em>get<\/em><\/strong><\/span> out of it\u2013 there are probably lessons to be learned and valuable takeaways that are worth more than gold.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[divider]<\/p>\n<h2><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">2.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Work, work, work your way up (to prove yourself)!\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Society teaches us to be <em>prideful<\/em>, rather than <em>confident<\/em>, about our talents.<\/span> When we are told that <em>we are what we achieve<\/em>, life becomes a striving game. Suddenly it\u2019s all about <em>competing<\/em> and <em>comparing<\/em>. Rather than appreciating the different talents, we synchronously (and superficially) strive for \u201csuccess,\u201d which in most people\u2019s minds equates to \u201cstatus.\u201d And when we <em>do<\/em> get ahead of others, we become oh-so self-absorbed and self-important.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><strong>What we need to do:\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Relax, rest assured, and remind yourself that you are unique, but not unique above others.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Give yourself a break! <em>Stop striving so much.<\/em> Success is never an <em>end result<\/em>, nor is it about <em>outdoing<\/em> one another. It is about <span style=\"color: #333333;\"><em><strong>fully<\/strong> <strong>utilizing<\/strong> <strong>your talents<\/strong><\/em><\/span> to make a difference. Be confident and use your talents to progress yourself but don\u2019t let confidence (good) turn into pride (bad). There is a thin line between confidence and conceit (<em>and\u00a0 people may not be able to tell<\/em>) but <span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>YOU<\/strong> <\/span>will definitely <em>feel<\/em> the difference\u2013 confidence feels good, while pride, <em>ironically<\/em>, causes anxiety because it feeds on your own insecurities.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>[divider]<\/h2>\n<h2><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">3. \u201cFill, fill, fill that resume and show, show, show (only the good stuff)!\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Society tricks us into believing that treasure is what is displayed on the outside rather than what is kept on the inside.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Have you noticed how our resume culture<span style=\"color: #333333;\"> <em>normalizes<\/em> <\/span>showing off? It\u2019s become a huge <span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong><em>show and tell<\/em><\/strong>,<\/span> where we strive to prove our worth and put a value to ourselves by externally displaying our achievements. We become obsessed with <em>quantifying<\/em> our experiences and putting a number to everything.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Even worse,<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tun.com\/blog\/5-ways-to-detach-yourself-from-social-media\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">social media<\/a><span style=\"color: #333333;\"> fosters the culture of showing off.<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> While the use of social media to share and celebrate one\u2019s achievements or the \u201chighlights\u201d of one\u2019s life isn\u2019t bad, <em>when abused or misused<\/em>, it becomes very dangerous. When we find ourselves constantly polishing the outside while hiding our imperfections, worrying about what others will think of us, and seeking validation in our number of \u201clikes,\u201d it\u2019s a clear sign that there is some <em>unlearning<\/em> to do.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><strong>What we need to do: <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Chill, chill, chill with the externalizing and fill, fill, fill the void inside.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">More important than your \u201cskills\u201d or \u201cexperiences\u201d is your <span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>character<\/strong><\/span>. <em>Are you someone who is likeable? Are you able to engage and connect with people who know absolutely nothing about you? How many people can you impress just by being you and not the best version of yourself?<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">After all, you\u2019re not going to walk around wearing your resume or your social media accounts around your neck, are you?<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">So work on building your character rather than your professional and\/or online persona. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>Because what\u2019s inside\u2013 <em>that\u2019s<\/em> the real treasure.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Real talk: Society teaches us a lot of things that are toxic to the mind, body, and soul.\u00a0And it takes our conscious effort to unlearn those unhealthy mindsets and ways of life.
