Before becoming the 47th vice president of the United States, he represented Delaware in the U.S. Senate for 36 years &#8212; from 1973 to 2009. Up until Biden announced his candidacy, many people questioned if the 76-year-old had the desire to run for office. But to Biden, he never really had a choice. I believe history will look back on four years of this president and all he embraces as an aberrant moment in time. But if we give Donald Trump eight years in the White House, he will forever and fundamentally alter the character of this nation \u2014 who we are \u2014 and I cannot stand by and watch that happen.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>Here is what Joe Biden stands for:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tun.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Joe-Biden-2020-Infographic-529x1024.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-32683\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1. Joe Biden on Higher Education<\/strong><br><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Free College <\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Biden vocalized his support of free four-year college in 2015. In a more <a href=\"https:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2018\/05\/08\/news\/economy\/joe-biden-income-inequality\/index.html\">recent speech<\/a>, he explained the details of his plan. He claims that his free-college program would cost $6 billion every year, and it would be paid for by eliminating the \u201cstepped-up basis loophole,\u201d which essentially allows heirs to inheritances to avoid paying capital gains taxes on inherited assets like stocks and land. <br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Community College <\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Biden has been a staunch supporter of making community college free for quite some time. In 2015, he stood alongside President Obama in requesting funding to make two years of community college free for low-income students. His wife Jill has spent time teaching in community colleges, and calls them \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/bidenfoundation.org\/pillars\/community-colleges\/\">America\u2019s best-kept secret<\/a>.\u201d She serves as the honorary chair to the College Promise Campaign, an organization dedicated to making free community college a reality in all 50 states. If she becomes the First Lady, there is a good chance making community college free would be at the top of her bucket list. <br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Student Loans<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The former Vice President takes a more moderate <a href=\"https:\/\/joebiden.com\/beyondhs\/\">approach<\/a> to solving the student loan crisis. He won\u2019t forgive all student loans, but instead would simplify income-driven repayment plans. <br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Under a Biden presidency, graduates making less than $25,000 won\u2019t have any student loan payments and won\u2019t accrue any interest on their loans. Everyone else will pay no more than 5 percent of their discretionary income towards loans. And after 20 years, those who\u2019ve \u201cresponsibly made payments,\u201d will see the remainder of their loans forgiven. <br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. Joe Biden on Social Justice<\/strong><br><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Income Inequality <\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Biden recognizes the need to address income inequality, but he has hesitated to support progressive ideas, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tun.com\/blog\/andrew-yang-2020-on-higher-education-and-6-other-key-issues\/\">Andrew Yang<\/a>\u2019s universal basic income, or a hefty tax on the uber-rich that is supported some of his Democratic competitors, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tun.com\/blog\/elizabeth-warren-2020-on-higher-education-and-6-other-key-issues\/\">Elizabeth Warren<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tun.com\/blog\/bernie-sanders-2020-on-higher-education-and-6-other-key-issues\/\">Bernie Sanders<\/a>, and others.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead, he has shown support for more moderate-progressive ideas like expanding tax credits for low-income people and raising the minimum wage to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epionline.org\/oped\/joe-biden-and-the-15-question\/\">$15 an hour<\/a>. <br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I love Bernie, but I&#8217;m not Bernie Sanders. I don&#8217;t think 500 billionaires are the reason why we&#8217;re in trouble,&#8221; Biden said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2018\/05\/08\/news\/economy\/joe-biden-income-inequality\/index.html\">2018 speech<\/a>. &#8220;I get into a lot of trouble with my party when I say that wealthy Americans are just as patriotic as poor folks.&#8221;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>LGBT Rights <\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Biden has been a long-time <a href=\"https:\/\/bidenfoundation.org\/pillars\/equality\/\">supporter<\/a> of gay marriage, as he believes that \u201cin America, everyone is entitled to be treated with dignity and respect, regardless of who they are or whom they love.\u201d <br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But his support extends beyond gay marriage. His discourse suggests that he would push for all legislature intended to expand LGBT rights. <br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2018, the Biden Foundation launched a <a href=\"https:\/\/bidenfoundation.org\/news\/biden-foundation-launches-family-community-acceptance-campaign\/\">campaign<\/a> intended to raise awareness of the importance of family and community acceptance of LGBT youth, titled \u201cAs You Are.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m so proud to announce the Biden Foundation has launched this campaign,\u201d Biden said in a statement. \u201cWe\u2019ll use our resources to highlight the harms of family rejection &#8212; and lift up research, best practices, and personal stories to powerfully show the significant value of family acceptance.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Criminal Justice<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In the past, Biden has been tough on crime. In the 1990s, he supported crime bills that set strict prison sentencing laws and, according to some, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/policy-and-politics\/2019\/4\/25\/18282870\/joe-biden-criminal-justice-war-on-drugs-mass-incarceration\">escalated<\/a> mass incarceration and the war on drugs. <br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, Biden has since recognized his actions as mistakes. <br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2019\/01\/21\/politics\/joe-biden-criminal-justice\/index.html\">recent speech<\/a> at the National Action Network&#8217;s Martin Luther King Jr. breakfast in Washington, D.C., Biden referred to a 1994 crime bill that set strict prison sentencing standards saying, &#8220;It was a big mistake when it was made. We thought, we were told by the experts, that crack you never go back, it was somehow fundamentally different. It&#8217;s not different. But it&#8217;s trapped an entire generation.&#8221;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;There&#8217;s something we have to admit &#8212; not you &#8212; we, white America, has to admit, there&#8217;s still a systematic racism and it goes almost unnoticed by so many of us,&#8221; he added. <br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3. Joe Biden on the Environment <\/strong><br><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Climate Change <\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Biden is a staunch supporter of the fight against climate change.  In his recently released <a href=\"https:\/\/joebiden.com\/Climate\/\">climate plan<\/a>, he aims to eliminate the United States\u2019 net carbon emissions by 2050. To do so, he suggests that the federal government should invest $1.7 trillion into clean energy research, among other things, over the next 10 years, which he claims could be funded by rolling back corporate tax cuts. <br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As vice president, he helped the Obama administration enter the United States into the Paris Agreement. (The Trump administration subsequently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tun.com\/blog\/trump-paris-accord-implications-university-climate-research-activism\/\">withdrew<\/a> the nation from the Paris Agreement.) <br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And in 1986, Biden introduced a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/99th-congress\/senate-bill\/2891\">climate bill<\/a> &#8212; first-of-its-kind &#8212; that called on the president to establish a task force to research global climate. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Sustainability and Clean Energy<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Biden has expressed his support of the need to transition to renewable energy, but the former vice president has been hesitant to go as far as supporting Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez\u2019s (D-N.Y.) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tun.com\/blog\/why-millenials-listen-when-alexandria-ocasio-cortez-speaks\/\">Green New Deal<\/a>. <br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a 2019 address, however, Biden <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c-span.org\/video\/?c4776441\/joe-biden-100-cities-towns-100-renewable-energy\">praised<\/a> the 100 cities and towns that have committed to 100-percent clean renewable energy. That is consistent with his position in 2015. <br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur energy future is in cleaner, cheaper renewable energy, and all of you understand that clean energy investments have provided financial and social returns,\u201d Biden <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/energy-environment\/245178-biden-promotes-private-sector-clean-energy-investments\">said<\/a> in 2015. <br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>4. Joe Biden on Immigration <\/strong><br><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In regards to immigration, Biden seems to stand in the middle. He has denounced Trump\u2019s idea to build a border wall. But in 2006, then-Senator Biden <a href=\"https:\/\/wjla.com\/news\/nation-world\/2006-secure-fence-act-vs-trumps-border-wall\">voted in favor<\/a> of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.govinfo.gov\/content\/pkg\/PLAW-109publ367\/html\/PLAW-109publ367.htm\">Secure Fence Act<\/a>, which would fund the construction of a 700-mile fence along the United States-Mexico border. <br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While serving as vice president, however, Biden was a <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/business-a-lobbying\/349235-biden-trumps-dreamer-decision-cruel\">staunch supporter<\/a> of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which protects children who were illegally brought into the United States. <br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And at a recent discussion at the University of Pennsylvania, Biden dismissed Trump\u2019s immigration policies, <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/latino\/430644-biden-slams-trump-immigration-policies-its-about-xenophobia\">saying<\/a>, \u201cIt\u2019s about xenophobia. This is not healthy.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>5. Joe Biden on Marijuana <\/strong><br><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Biden stands in opposition to the majority of his Democratic competitors in regards to marijuana legalization. He does not want to see marijauna legalized, as he considers it a \u201cgateway drug.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a 2010 interview, Biden <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leafly.com\/news\/politics\/joe-bidens-drug-war-record-is-so-much-worse-than-you-think\">said<\/a>, \u201cThere\u2019s a difference between sending someone to jail for a few ounces and legalizing it. The punishment should fit the crime. But I think legalization is a mistake. I still believe [marijuana] is a gateway drug.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Granted, 2010 was a long time ago, and many politicians have switched their opinion regarding marijauna since then. But Biden has yet to do so. <br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>6. Joe Biden on Gun Control <\/strong><br><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Biden supports universal background checks and a ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines. He also said he would support a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/joe-biden-pushes-for-federal-gun-buyback-program-assault-weapons-ban-in-wake-of-mass-shootings\/2019\/08\/05\/6261d998-b7e5-11e9-b3b4-2bb69e8c4e39_story.html\">federal gun buyback program<\/a>.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But gun control is nothing new topic to the former vice president. He has been pushing for stricter gun legislature for decades. In 1989, he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1989\/07\/08\/us\/import-ban-on-assault-rifles-becomes-permanent.html\">sponsored a bill<\/a> that would ban nine assault rifles, including the AR-15. In 1993, he voted in favor of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/103\/bills\/hr1025\/BILLS-103hr1025enr.pdf\">Brady Bill<\/a>, which established a five-day waiting period on handgun purchases. And after the Sandy Hook shooting in 2012, Obama made Biden the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2012\/dec\/19\/obama-gun-control-biden-task-force\">head of a task force<\/a> to tackle the issue of gun violence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>7. Joe Biden on Net Neutrality <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Biden has a mixed record on net neutrality. He served as vice president in an administration that strongly supported net neutrality laws intended to protect individual\u2019s rights to a free and open internet. However, as a senator, Biden was hesitant to back net neutrality legislation. In 2006, he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/news\/senate-ponders-policing-of-net-neutrality-offenses\/\">sounded skeptical<\/a> of net neutrality, suggesting that there wasn\u2019t a big need for it.
