These grants are awarded and disbursed by the federal government.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unlike loans, recipients <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #ff0000;\">don\u2019t have to pay back Pell Grants<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This is, essentially, free money to students who could use some help paying for college.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pell Grants are solely <\/span><b>need-based<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> grants, so the amount awarded is determined based on the student\u2019s financial standing and enrollment status. Grades, test scores and academic performance in general are not taken into account.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Here are some quick facts about Pell Grants:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Pell Grants are <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.ed.gov\/programs\/fpg\/index.html\">accepted at 5,400<\/a> participating postsecondary institutions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A student can receive a Pell Grant for a maximum of 12 semesters or the equivalent (approximately 6 years).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pell Grants are typically granted only to undergraduate students. In some cases, however, a student enrolled in a post-baccalaureate teacher certification or licensing program may be eligible.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The maximum Pell Grant for the 2025-26 award year (July 1, 2025 through June 30, 2026) is $7,395. This figure could change yearly. Also, in special circumstances, some students may qualify to receive 150 percent of their Pell award for an award year, also known as \u201cyear-round Pell.\u201d Check with your school to see if you qualify for the extra award.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The minimum award is approximately 10 percent of the maximum. For the 2025-26 award year, the minimum Pell Grant will be $740.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>To find out more about Pell Grants, read on. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>1. Are you eligible for Pell Grants?<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To qualify and apply for a Pell Grant, you must <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #ff0000;\">meet ALL<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the following requirements.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>First<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you must <\/span><b><i>have a high school diploma<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, GED, or approved homeschool education<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Second<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you must <\/span><b><i>be enrolled in an eligible degree\/certificate progra<\/i><\/b><b>m<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Check with your school\u2019s financial aid department to confirm eligibility.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Third<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you must <strong>be <\/strong><\/span><b><i><strong>r<\/strong>egistered with the Selective Service<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, if you are a male between the ages of 18 and 25.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Fourth<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you must <\/span><b><i>have a valid Social Security Number<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, unless you are a citizen of the Pacific Freely Associated States (the Marshall Islands, the Federal States of Micronesia, and the Republic of Palau).<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Fifth<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you must <\/span><b><i>be a U.S. citizen or U.S. national<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #ff0000;\">OR<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> fall under one of the following categories of <\/span><b><i>eligible noncitizen<\/i><\/b><b>s<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who have: <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A green card; <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/help.cbp.gov\/app\/answers\/detail\/a_id\/880\/~\/definition-of-an-i-94\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Form I-94<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cArrival-Departure Record,\u201d showing \u201cRefugee,\u201d \u201cAsylum Granted,\u201d \u201cCuban-Haitian Entrant,\u201d \u201cConditional Entrant\u201d (valid if issued before April 1, 1980), or \u201cParolee\u201d; <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ifap.ed.gov\/dpcletters\/GEN1007.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/help-center\/answers\/article\/i-am-non-us-citizen-can-i-get-federal-student-aid\"><a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/help-center\/answers\/article\/i-am-non-us-citizen-can-i-get-federal-student-aid\">battered immigrant status<\/a><\/a><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or is the child of a person with battered immigrant status; or<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/travel.state.gov\/content\/travel\/en\/us-visas\/other-visa-categories\/visas-for-victims-of-human-trafficking.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">T-Visa<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (for victims of human trafficking).<\/span><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Sixth<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you must <em><strong>maintain<\/strong> <\/em><\/span><b><i>Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. To demonstrate this, students must maintain a certain grade point average (GPA), take a minimum number of credit hours per semester, and be on track to complete their degree in an acceptable time period. The standards for SAP vary from school to school, so speak with your school\u2019s financial aid office to see what you should expect.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Seventh<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you must <\/span><b><i>demonstrate financial nee<\/i><em>d<\/em><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which will be assessed based on the data on your <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tun.com\/blog\/the-complete-guide-to-fafsa\/\">Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Finally<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you must <\/span><b><i>NOT already have a bachelor\u2019s or professional degree<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (with the exception of some students enrolled in post-baccalaureate teacher certification or licensing programs).<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>2. How much will you get in Pell Grants?<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you qualify for Pell Grants, the amount you will receive will depend on your financial need, which the federal government calculates based on the following criteria:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your <strong><em><strong><em>Student Aid Index<\/em><\/strong><\/em> <em>(SAI)<\/em>:<\/strong> Your &nbsp;SAI is an index number ranging from \u20131500 to 999999, which is calculated using the information that you and your contributors provided on the FAFSA form.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b><i>cost of attendance<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (COA), as determined by your school for your specific program: Your COA is determined by the following factors: (1) tuition and fees; (2) room and board or off-campus living expenses; (3) the cost of books, supplies, transportation, loan fees, and other expenses; (4) disability costs, when applicable; (5) an allowance for child care or other dependent care, when applicable; and (6) the cost of eligible study-abroad programs, when applicable.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether you are enrolled as a <\/span><b><i>full-time or part-time<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> student.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether you intend to attend school for a <\/span><b><i>full academic year or less<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The financial aid department at your school will determine the amount of aid you qualify for.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are the <a href=\"https:\/\/fsapartners.ed.gov\/knowledge-center\/fsa-handbook\/2025-2026\" title=\"\">tables used to calculate<\/a> Pell Grant award amounts for the 2025-26 period.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>3. How to apply for Pell Grants<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In order to apply for a Pell Grant, you must <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.ed.gov\/sa\/fafsa\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/a>fill out the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tun.com\/blog\/the-complete-guide-to-fafsa\/\" title=\"\">FAFSA<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> form<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The FAFSA, which, as its name suggests, is free to fill out and submit, is used by current and prospective colleges to determine a student\u2019s eligibility for various forms of financial aid. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You have to fill out the FAFSA <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #ff0000;\">every year<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in order to stay eligible for federal awards, so make sure you stay on top of the deadlines and any changes in the form.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Filling out the FAFSA can be a long process that requires a lot of information, so be sure to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #ff0000;\">start early<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and get it in as soon as possible. How will you receive your Pell Grant?<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After you\u2019ve filled out your FAFSA, received an aid offer from your school, and informed your school about which financial aid you want to accept, you are ready to receive your Pell Grant. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How you will receive your Pell Grant depends on your school\u2019s disbursement policy. Schools may apply the Pell Grant funds directly to your school costs, pay you directly, or use a combination of these methods.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Generally, your Pell Grant, along with any other grants or loans, will cover a full academic year and will be disbursed in at least two payments. Typically, these payments come once per academic term (semester, trimester, or quarter). <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In most cases, your college will apply your Pell Grant funds, along with other grants and loans, directly to your tuition and room and board fees. If you have any grant or loan money left over, your school will pay you in the form of a refund.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>5. How to stay eligible for Pell Grants<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you meet the basic eligibility criteria for federal aid, then keeping your grants is as simple as keeping your grades up, taking enough credits, and filling out the FAFSA form each year.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are a number of ways you might lose your eligibility for federal student aid. You may no longer meet the basic eligibility criteria if your immigrant status has changed, for example, or if &nbsp;your grades have slipped.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whatever your situation, there may be a way to remedy it and regain your Pell Grant funds.
