{"id":29440,"date":"2019-02-01T13:59:32","date_gmt":"2019-02-01T18:59:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tun.com\/blog\/?p=29440"},"modified":"2020-05-07T16:02:28","modified_gmt":"2020-05-07T20:02:28","slug":"vcu-models-how-universities-can-strengthen-mental-health-programs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tun.com\/blog\/vcu-models-how-universities-can-strengthen-mental-health-programs\/","title":{"rendered":"VCU Models How Universities Can Strengthen Mental Health Programs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is no question that mental illness is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tun.com\/blog\/not-alone-mental-illness-widespread-at-universities\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">widespread<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at colleges and universities. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For many students, stress, anxiety, depression and other mental disorders are impairing their ability to learn. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With this in mind, nearly 200 colleges and universities across the United States have joined <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jedcampus.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">JED Campus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an initiative of the JED Foundation geared to improve the emotional wellbeing of students. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recently, Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.vcu.edu\/students\/VCU_joins_network_of_colleges_to_strengthen_campus_mental_health\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">signed on as a new member<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Together, VCU and JED Campus are working to develop a multi-year strategic plan to boost campus efforts in limiting substance abuse, preventing suicide, and guaranteeing that students &nbsp;graduate mentally and emotionally prepared to address life\u2019s challenges. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe\u2019re looking at anxiety, depression, stress management, mindfulness and our overall campus culture,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thewell.vcu.edu\/about\/our-staff\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lisa Joyner<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the director of The Wellness Resource Center at VCU, said in a statement. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOne of the main focuses for us is alcohol and other drugs,\u201d she continued. \u201cWe\u2019re looking at how students get in to see clinicians for anxiety, depression, even eating disorders, and many other areas of mental illness. It\u2019s thinking [about] the larger scope of mental health.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This initiative comes at an appropriate time, as Gen Zs, many of whom are in college, report having <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tun.com\/blog\/why-gen-z-is-the-most-stressed-generation\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">worse mental health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than any other generation. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are many safe ways alleviate stress, anxiety and other mental illnesses, but turning to drugs and\/or alcohol is not healthy, especially for a young college student. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is why developing a sustainable way to limit student substance abuse is such a priority for JED Campus and VCU. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou will see us expand the collegiate [substance abuse] recovery program this fall,\u201d Joyner said in a statement. \u201cWe\u2019ll be looking at the number of meetings we have, access to resources for our students, and we\u2019ll work with Human Resources to look at ways we can engage with faculty and staff who may be able to benefit from various meetings on campus.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, The Wellness Resource Center has created a peer health education group geared to help create mental health programs and to inform students about the resources available to them on campus. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The university also plans to implement signs with information about the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline in its parking garages, according to the release. &nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For VCU, being part of a group of nearly 200 member schools is a huge plus. \u201cIt gives us a platform to communicate with one another,\u201d Joyner said in a statement. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Currently, VCU is going through an \u201cenvironmental scan\u201d scheduled for completion this spring. The results will show what\u2019s working, what\u2019s not and what else needs to be done, Joyner explained in a statement. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe see students coming to campus and they are stressed out or depressed and they are wondering, \u2018What resources does VCU have to support me?,\u2019\u202f\u201d she continued. \u201cI think with us joining JED, we can sit down and say, \u2018We know the top mental health issues our students are battling, and here\u2019s how we can address those issues.\u2019\u202f\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There is no question that mental illness is widespread at colleges and universities.
