This year, we are doing something different. Instead of handing checks to celebrities, we\u2019re launching the Great Unknowns Scholarship to help young people in need get a foothold in higher education.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The beautifully crafted 140-second commercial melds three stories together: the story of a small town, the pride in cars made there, and the great unknown students. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With a high school as the backdrop for most of the story, the camera zooms in on a young boy in a cowboy hat saying:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe\u2019re not famous. There are no stars in the sidewalk for us. No statues in our honor. We\u2019re just a small Georgia town of complete unknowns. The closest thing to a world stage is 81 miles away in Atlanta tonight. \u2026 Because we\u2019re not known for who we are. We hope to be known for what we do, what we build. \u2026 No, we\u2019re not famous, but we are incredible. And we make incredible things.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The commercial ends with the message:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHere\u2019s to the great unknowns \u2026 Give it everything.\u201d &nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=u_awpNKfjDk&#038;feature=youtu.be\">https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=u_awpNKfjDk&amp;feature=youtu.be<\/a><\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2><b>Helping students &#8212; not celebrities<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rather than pay for celebrity endorsements, Kia will be helping 16 students with $5,000 scholarships. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our goal is to discover and reward students who embody the spirit of \u2018Give It Everything,\u2019 and help them pursue their academic dreams,\u201d Kia notes <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in its scholarship <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scholarsapply.org\/greatunknownsscholarship\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">application rules<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While payouts for celebrity endorsements are often held behind closed doors, it has been reported that Arnold Schwarzenegger was paid<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment\/envelope\/cotown\/la-et-ct-arnold-schwarzenegger-bud-light-super-bowl-ad-20140120-story.html\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$3 million<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for a Bud Light Super Bowl commercial in 2014. During the 2005 Super Bowl, Brad Pitt was reportedly paid over<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/pictures\/commercial-success\/8\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$4 million<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for appearing in a Heineken commercial.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Until now, Kia has followed suit. The company\u2019s commercial in last year\u2019s Super Bowl featured Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But, Kia now understands that its money is better spent on helping deserving students than promoting celebrities, and it encourages other companies to do the same. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Impact of brand scholarships<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tun.com\/blog\/reasons-for-brands-to-sponsor-scholarships\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scholarships<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are a great way for brands to give back to their communities and create a lasting impact.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even the funniest Super Bowl ads are forgotten. But deserving students, who otherwise may not have been able to afford higher education, will never forget the company that put them in position to achieve their dreams.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By sponsoring a scholarship, companies elevate the image of their brand within the college student community, including their families and friends.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kia isn\u2019t the first company to offer brand scholarships. Taco Bell, Nikon, Coca Cola, Staples, Dr. Pepper, JP Morgan and Hulu have sponsored scholarships as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taco Bell plans to award $4 million in 2019 through its<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tacobellfoundation.org\/live-mas-scholarship\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Live M\u00e1s Scholarship<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which focuses on a student\u2019s passion, rather than academic or athletic performances. Through its scholarships, the company is investing in &#8220;the next generation of innovators, creators and dreamers who want to make a difference in the world.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/programs.applyists.com\/nikon\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Nikon Storytellers Scholarship<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is in its second year, aims to help create the next generation of visual storytellers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe understand that it takes dedication to pursue and become successful in creative fields, and we are excited to play a role in supporting students\u2019 achievement in academic excellence through The Nikon Storytellers Scholarship,\u201d said Lisa Baxt, the associate general manager of communications at Nikon.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ten Nikon award winners will receive $10,000 to help fund their tuition, books and supplies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cRecipients of The Nikon Storytellers Scholarship are empowered to push their creative boundaries and pursue new projects to further their development as young creators,\u201d Baxt said. &nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As college tuitions continue to skyrocket, a degree in higher education is becoming more and more difficult to attain.
