And although many colleges and universities have taken strides to make sure all of their students are well-fed, the government has some work to do, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gao.gov\/products\/GAO-19-95\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">new report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from the Government Accountability Office (GAO) suggests. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, to earn a high-paying job, a college education is next to essential. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A degree in higher education paves the way for social and financial opportunity. For less financially-fortunate students, it can be seen as a ticket out of the lower-income bracket.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But affording an education is difficult, even with financial aid. Skyrocketing college costs are forcing students to take out loans that put them in debilitating debt for years to come. On average, students are graduating with about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/story\/student-debt-just-hit-15-trillion-2018-05-08\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$37,000<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in student debt.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is less often discussed, however, are the financial dilemmas that students face while still in school.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since many students only have time to work a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tun.com\/blog\/working-in-college-harder-for-low-income-students\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">part-time job<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the costs of tuition, rent and books are forcing them to often forego the very thing keeping them alive &#8212; food.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to a 2016 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/studentsagainsthunger.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Hunger_On_Campus.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, only 18 percent of students reported being able to cover all of their college expenses by working a job. \u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cA surprising number of students live at or near the poverty level,\u201d the authors wrote. \u201cOne common consequence of poverty is food insecurity &#8212; the lack of reliable access to sufficient quantities of affordable, nutritious food.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 2016 study shows that 48 percent of college students experience food insecurity.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Government must improve communication<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The GAO report was requested by four U.S. senators who were interested in the efforts being taken to address campus hunger. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When non-students face food insecurity, they often turn to the Food and Nutrition Service&#8217;s (FNS) Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), the program formerly known as food stamps. But the program has distinct rules, and college students may have limited access, according to the report. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Through their research, the authors of the GAO report found that 2 million at-risk students who were potentially eligible for SNAP didn\u2019t receive any of the program\u2019s benefits.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is primarily due to a lack of communication. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To conduct the report, GAO contacted 14 colleges to see how they are dealing with campus hunger. Of the 14 colleges, nine had officials and students who voiced concerns about being unfamiliar or not understanding SNAP\u2019s student eligibility rules. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSome college officials said that they would like information from FNS to better explain SNAP student rules, but FNS has not made such information easily accessible on its website,\u201d the authors wrote in the report. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The authors proposed two recommendations for executive action. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First, they suggest the \u201cAdministrator of FNS should make information on their website regarding student SNAP eligibility requirements easier to understand and more accessible, as a resource for colleges and state SNAP agencies.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And second, the \u201cAdministrator of FNS should coordinate with its regional offices to collect and review information about existing SNAP flexibilities and examples of approaches state SNAP agencies are taking to assist eligible college students to access SNAP benefits, and share such information with state SNAP agencies.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What universities are doing<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Colleges and universities, on the other hand, are working hard to make sure students aren\u2019t faced with food insecurities. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Campus food pantries, including some that offer fresh, organic fruits and vegetables, are popping up at schools all over the U.S.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For a comprehensive list of examples, click <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tun.com\/blog\/national-push-to-eliminate-hunger-on-college-campuses\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, programs, such as <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.swipehunger.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Swipe Out Hunger<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which has students donating extra meal swipes to stock campus food pantries, have gained widespread appeal.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Need to prioritize campus hunger<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Food insecurity impedes a student\u2019s ability to focus and learn. How can students effectively study if they are worried about where they are going to get their next meal?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If a student\u2019s family is unable to financially support them, it can be extremely hard to afford the many costs of college.
