People make it their goal to spend more time at the gym, raise their grades, eat healthier, move up at work and much more. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The problem is, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/health.usnews.com\/health-news\/blogs\/eat-run\/articles\/2015-12-29\/why-80-percent-of-new-years-resolutions-fail\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">80 percent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of these goals fall apart once the second week of February comes along. &nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In order for people to accomplish a feat, they must learn the best ways to set and maintain their goals, which is often the hardest part. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Losing weight, improving a grade point average and earning a dream job, for example, are all very overwhelming tasks. Most times, they won\u2019t be accomplished in a month, or even a year. But that doesn\u2019t mean they should be forgotten or set aside. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>How to set a good goal<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Setting a goal is tricky. It takes thought, dedication and self-reflection.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.brandeisjudges.com\/sports\/mten\/coaches\/BenLamanna?view=bio\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ben Lamanna<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a men\u2019s and women\u2019s tennis coach at Brandeis University, has turned many players into All-Americans by teaching them how to properly and effectively set goals. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cA good goal is centered around something that you truly care about and will maintain interest in; you will feel confident that the goal you set is something that can be attained,\u201d Lamanna said in a Q&amp;A published on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.brandeis.edu\/now\/2019\/january\/new-year-resolutions-lamanna.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brandeis Now<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cThe goal should be specific, measurable and attainable.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lots of times, people will set goals to \u201close weight\u201d or \u201cdo better in school.\u201d While these are objectively good ideas, they aren\u2019t precise enough to encourage sustainable dedication towards a goal. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For a goal to be achievable, it must be specific. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFrom my top players over the years, I&#8217;ve heard a lot of \u2018I want to win x or y,\u2019 like an NCAA title,\u201d Lamanna said in the Q&amp;A. \u201cThat\u2019s something we all should strive for, but we all need to understand how to get there.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If someone wants to \u201cbe healthier\u201d in the new year, a good goal for them may be to run a mile every day after class or work, or cut out red meat from their diet. And if these steps seem overwhelming, start smaller. Instead, the goals could start at walking a mile and only eating red meat twice a week. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The point is, it is imperative to be realistic and truthful to yourself. Personal goals aren\u2019t for anyone else. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Sticking to goals<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Goals cannot be accomplished if failure is expected. This is why breaking up a larger goal into smaller, more manageable steps is key. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Raising a GPA from a 2.0 to a 3.0, for example, can\u2019t be accomplished overnight. It takes a shift in personal mentality and approach that can only be accomplished through small day-to-day tasks &#8212; whether it be staying at the library for an extra hour every night or going to a professor\u2019s office hours. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt&#8217;s important to schedule it into your daily routine,\u201d Lamanna said in the Q&amp;A. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou need to force yourself to do things, to sometimes make sacrifices, and to receive feedback from others who can hold you accountable for your goals.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While self-motivation is a key component to sticking to a goal, sometimes discussing goals and asking for support with friends and family can be beneficial. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI aim to discuss goals routinely with student-athletes, both in group settings and in private,\u201d Lamanna continued. \u201cIt\u2019s important to keep checking in on goals, feeling good about the progress we\u2019ve made, and pushing onward.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Encourage self-growth<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Accomplishing a goal takes a lot of hard work and sacrifice, which can start to weigh on people. That is why it is important to take a step back and look in the mirror &#8212; both literally and metaphorically &#8212; to acknowledge hard work, recognize progress and be proud. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People who are serious about accomplishing their goals will be encouraged by their progress. <\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The start of a new year comes with many resolutions.
