Well, why haven\u2019t they?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chances are, they are probably bluffing, and their Facebook account might mean more to them than they would care to admit. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A recent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosone\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pone.0207101\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, combining research gathered by three economists and a social media expert, found that most people would need to be <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/now.tufts.edu\/news-releases\/cost-walk-away-facebook-year-more-1000-new-study-finds\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">paid more than $1,000<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, on average, to deactivate their Facebook accounts for a year. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The researchers ran three auctions, dealing with real money, in which people bid on how much they would have to be paid to deactivate their Facebook accounts for time spans ranging between a day to a year. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAuction participants faced real financial consequences, so they had an incentive to seriously consider what compensation they would want to close their accounts for a set period of time and to bid truthfully,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nutrition.tufts.edu\/profile\/faculty\/sean-cash\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sean B. Cash<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an economist and the Bergstrom Foundation Professor at the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University and co-author of the study, said in a statement. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cash worked alongside <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/comartsci.msu.edu\/our-people\/saleem-e-alhabash\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saleem Alhabash<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an associate professor of advertising and public relations at Michigan State University, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kenyon.edu\/directories\/campus-directory\/biography\/jay-corrigan\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jay Corrigan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a professor of economics at Kenyon College, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.susqu.edu\/academics\/faculty\/fac\/matthew-rousu\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Matthew Rousu<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a professor of economics at Susquehanna University. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>The auctions<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The auctions included both students and adult community members. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cStudents placed a higher value on Facebook than community members,\u201d Cash said in a statement. \u201cA number of participants refused to bid at all, suggesting that deactivating Facebook for a year was not a welcome possibility.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first auction featured bids from 122 students from a Midwestern college. On average, they would need $4.17 to deactivate their Facebook for a day, $13.89 for three days, and $37 for a week.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The second auction featured bids from 133 students and 138 adults from a large Midwestern university\/town. On average, the students would need $2,076 to deactivate their Facebook for a year, while adults in the community would need $1,139.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The third auction featured bids from 931 adults averaging 33 years old. This group required an average $1,921 to deactivate Facebook for a year. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Takeaways<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These findings suggest Facebook is worth far more to its users than to its shareholders. The current estimated market value of Facebook is nearly $180 per user, which is less than a fourth of the value suggested through these auctions, according to the press release. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSocial media, and the internet more broadly, have changed the way we live and the way we keep in touch with friends and family, but it\u2019s hard to find evidence that the internet has made us richer or more productive at work,\u201d Corrigan said in a statement. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe know people must derive tremendous value from Facebook or they wouldn\u2019t spend millions of hours on the site every day,\u201d he continued. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite the recent user privacy controversies, Facebook is still the most visited social networking site and the third most visited site on the internet, behind Google and YouTube.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And it isn\u2019t just by chance that humans are addicted to Facebook. It was designed that way, Sean Parker, the first president of Facebook, explained in an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/sean-parker-unloads-on-facebook-god-only-knows-what-its-doing-to-our-childrens-brains-1513306792-f855e7b4-4e99-4d60-8d51-2775559c2671.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">interview with Axios<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;The thought process that went into building these applications, Facebook being the first of them, &#8230; was all about: &#8216;How do we consume as much of your time and conscious attention as possible?&#8217;,&#8221; he said. &#8220;And that means that we need to sort of give you a little dopamine hit every once in a while, because someone liked or commented on a photo or a post or whatever.
