{"id":28578,"date":"2018-12-21T10:39:06","date_gmt":"2018-12-21T15:39:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tun.com\/blog\/?p=28578"},"modified":"2021-05-21T06:07:21","modified_gmt":"2021-05-21T10:07:21","slug":"employers-prefer-social-skills-timeliness-success","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tun.com\/blog\/employers-prefer-social-skills-timeliness-success\/","title":{"rendered":"Employers Prefer Social Skills, Timeliness to Academic Success"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most employers <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurekalert.org\/pub_releases\/2018-12\/tfg-rm121318.php\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">care more about<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> social skills and timeliness than how well you do in academics, a new study finds. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/02680939.2018.1549752\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, conducted by professor <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cardiff.ac.uk\/people\/view\/38149-brown-phil\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Phillip Brown<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and professor <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cardiff.ac.uk\/people\/view\/169251-\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Manuel Souto-Otero<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Cardiff University, looked at more than 21 million job advertisements in the UK and found that only 18 percent of them specified an academic credential requirement. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead, employers are more likely to look for specific social and cognitive skills, such as time management and organization, that demonstrate \u201cjob readiness.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The researchers found that, for most job fields, employers emphasized the need for employees to be able to do their job quickly, efficiently and within short time spans. This ability can\u2019t necessarily be proven with academic credentials, alone. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While this new research could be disheartening to college students who just spent many stress-filled hours studying for their final exams, it doesn\u2019t suggest that academics are a waste of time. Many of the skills and experiences needed to develop \u201cjob readiness\u201d are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tun.com\/blog\/humanities-major-can-earn-you-a-job-too\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">taught in college<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But to be a qualified job candidate, people need more than a degree. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This research highlights how important it is for students to build up work experience through <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tun.com\/blog\/how-to-get-an-internship-what-every-college-student-needs-to-know\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">internships<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and apprenticeships.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Higher education, by itself, can only go so far. Employers want workers who are reliable and efficient, and those qualities are best proven by prior experience. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hiring someone with experience, whether it is an internship or a related job, means that employers will have to spend less time and money training new hires. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To employers, job candidates who are \u201ctrainable\u201d are not nearly as valuable as those who show they are capable of making an immediate impact.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This study focused specifically on employment in the UK, but <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/chronicle-assets.s3.amazonaws.com\/5\/items\/biz\/pdf\/Employers%20Survey.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">similar trends<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in which employers highlight the importance of internships and prior experience, occur in the U.S. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although some would assume that a shift away from employers focusing on academia would give those who can\u2019t afford college a better chance at landing a good job, the researchers say otherwise. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Job candidates who start off with better financial, cultural and social resources will likely still hold an advantage, the researchers warn. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;If the exchange value of credentials in the labor market is more limited than assumed, the idea of a level playing field will need to be cast far beyond the school gates or university lecture theatre,\u201d the researchers noted. \u201cThe failure to consider the importance of other skills, competences and experiences beyond formal qualifications in recruitment processes is destined to disappoint in efforts to reduce educational, labour market and wage inequalities.&#8221;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Most employers care more about social skills and timeliness than how well you do in academics, a new study finds.
