{"id":28507,"date":"2018-12-19T13:18:37","date_gmt":"2018-12-19T18:18:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tun.com\/blog\/?p=28507"},"modified":"2021-05-21T06:07:54","modified_gmt":"2021-05-21T10:07:54","slug":"new-initiative-women-more-power-in-us-national-security-and-foreign-policy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tun.com\/blog\/new-initiative-women-more-power-in-us-national-security-and-foreign-policy\/","title":{"rendered":"New Initiative May Give Women More Power in U.S. National Security And Foreign Policy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The representation of women in both the U.S. military and government has been increasing in recent years, but there is still a long way to go in order to reach true equality.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, women make up only <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cfr.org\/article\/demographics-us-military\">18 percent of the officer corps and 4 percent of the enlisted forces<\/a> in the U.S. military and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/resources\/idt-sh\/news_women_in_congress\">24 percent<\/a> of the U.S. Congress.<\/p>\n<p>Samantha Nerove, the founder and CEO of the non-profit, non-partisan group <a href=\"https:\/\/americamatters.com\/\">America Matters<\/a>, understands this is an issue after spending 25 years in the army, where she found herself largely outnumbered by men.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI spent 25 years in the service and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel, where I was often outnumbered by men. That is not a criticism of the Army or my time spent serving, it&#8217;s merely an observation that women aren&#8217;t as involved in that space and I want to change that,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>And Nerove, through America Matters, is on her way to do just that.<\/p>\n<p>Her organization recently launched a new initiative called Women Lead the Way, which is aimed to place women at the forefront of policy discussions and decision, especially in historically overlooked fields.<\/p>\n<p>Nerove <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/new-initiative-elevates-womens-voices-in-key-us-national-security-and-foreign-policy-areas-300761194.html\">announced the program\u2019s launch<\/a> at the 2019 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.womenseday.org\/\">Women&#8217;s Entrepreneurship Day<\/a> Summit held at the United Nations&#8217; headquarters in New York City.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Countries that empower their women have peace and prosperity as their calling card,\u201d she said at the summit.<\/p>\n<h2><b>Why Nerove started the initiative<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>Women Lead the Way was born out of Nerove\u2019s dedication to the cause of empowering women.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWomen Lead the Way was inspired by my lifetime pursuit of empowering women. It is the next chapter in my organization&#8217;s dedication to making the world more stable and secure for all of us,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Nerove founded America Matters to address issues important to the American people.<\/p>\n<p>The organization focuses on issues of security, education and service while promoting freedom and prosperity for all Americans &#8212; regardless of political affiliation, race, gender or sexual orientation.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/AmericaMattersNow\/videos\/535703036632118\/\">https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/AmericaMattersNow\/videos\/535703036632118\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>While the organization works on issues of diversity and inclusion, Nerove decided to launch a separate program that focuses entirely on women\u2019s empowerment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we empower women, give them the resources and platforms to be leaders, our country and communities benefit,\u201d she said at the summit.<\/p>\n<p>Nerove realized that in order for the United States to move forward as a leader of prosperity and peace, women will need to be more represented in areas that have historically overlooked or excluded them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI observed that solving the problems our nation is facing will be require drawing on a robust range of perspectives,\u201d she said. \u201cTo solve these difficult issues it will require empowering the incredible women of our nation to be more involved. I developed Women Lead the Way to begin that process.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><b>The importance of empowering women <\/b><\/h2>\n<p>Studies have shown that having more women in power can help increase economic strength and quality of life, and help <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tun.com\/blog\/women-in-government-less-corruption\/\">decrease corruption<\/a> and mortality rates, Nerove explained.<\/p>\n<p>The program\u2019s first initiative will be a project to team up with women in U.S. national security, in partnership with countries in the Middle East who are demonstrating an increased dedication to empowering women, said Nerove.<\/p>\n<p>In this way, Women Lead the Way will serve as a platform to help American women interact with women from around the world, in order to pursue global female empowerment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith Women Lead the Way, I am most looking forward to developing opportunities for American women to interface with women around the world to advance global peace and prosperity,\u201d Nerove said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The representation of women in both the U.S. military and government has been increasing in recent years, but there is still a long way to go in order to reach true equality.
