Overall, the company lost CAD$70 million, or $53.5 million.<\/p>\n<p>Now, the top 12 Canadian cannabis companies are worth nearly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/10\/16\/world\/canada\/cannabis-legalization-industry.html?rref=collection%2Fsectioncollection%2Fcanada&amp;action=click&amp;contentCollection=canada&amp;region=rank&amp;module=inline&amp;version=highlights&amp;contentPlacement=1&amp;pgtype=sectionfront\">CAD$55 billion<\/a>, or $42 billion, and mega brands like <a href=\"https:\/\/mic.com\/articles\/191372\/coca-cola-weed-marijuana-may-be-creating-a-cannabis-infused-soda#.RBV5uKBk9\">Coca-Cola<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/fortune.com\/2017\/10\/30\/constellation-brands-cannabis-canopy-growth\/\">Constellation Brands<\/a>, the makers of Corona, Modelo, Svedka and more, are ready to get involved.<\/p>\n<p>Canada\u2019s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is a strong proponent of the legalization.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been too easy for our kids to get marijuana &#8212; and for criminals to reap the profits,\u201d he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2018\/10\/17\/health\/canada-legalizes-recreational-marijuana\/index.html\">tweeted<\/a> in June. \u201cToday, we change that. Our plan to legalize &amp; regulate marijuana just passed the Senate. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/PromiseKept?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#PromiseKept<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Justin Trudeau (@JustinTrudeau) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JustinTrudeau\/status\/1009227308216045568?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 20, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>But the industry is so new, and people are so high on the law, that producers can\u2019t keep up.<\/p>\n<p>And now, a university wants to change that.<\/p>\n<p>In response to a need for skilled workers, Niagara College in Ontario, Canada, introduced a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/blog\/2017\/09\/19\/niagara-college-offer-canadas-first-postsecondary-credential-commercial-cannabis-production\/\">graduate certificate program<\/a> in commercial cannabis production.<\/p>\n<p>The program prepares post-graduate students to work in the licensed production of cannabis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re a pre-emptive college, and one of our key strengths is our ability to anticipate and respond to emerging industries, trends and labour-market needs,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.collegesinstitutes.ca\/what-we-do\/about\/board-of-directors\/dan-patterson\/\">Dan Patterson<\/a>, the president of Niagara College, said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Commercial Cannabis Production program reflects the College\u2019s mandate to develop responsive applied learning programs that address industry needs &#8212; much like our Commercial Beekeeping, Culinary Innovation, Renewable Energy Technician and other programs,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Niagara College to offer Canada\u2019s first postsecondary credential in Commercial Cannabis Production\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/GRqOWQgrQ30?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Although legal, the production of cannabis is a very highly regulated process by the government.<\/p>\n<p>The program will teach students all of the procedures, requirements, standards and regulations of the cannabis industry. By the time they have completed the one-year course, they will be skilled, knowledgeable greenhouse and controlled environment technicians.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a tremendous demand for knowledgeable, skilled workers in this highly technical industry,\u201d Roger Ferrreira, CEO of <a href=\"https:\/\/beleave.com\/ourstory\/\">Beleave, Inc.<\/a>, in Hamilton, Ontario, said in a statement. \u201cNiagara College having the vision to fill this knowledge gap is commendable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Partially due to its popularity, the program is extremely competitive and difficult to get into.<\/p>\n<p>Students applying for the program must have an accredited college or university degree in the fields of agribusiness, agricultural sciences, environmental science\/resource studies, horticulture or natural sciences, or they must have an \u201cacceptable combination of education and experience,\u201d according to Niagara College\u2019s press release.<\/p>\n<p>Medical marijuana has been legal in Canada since 2001, but extending the market to all consumers has caused huge financial gains.<\/p>\n<p>With the industry booming and growing, the program at Niagara College is there to make sure the country doesn\u2019t sell out.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Two days ago, Canada became the second country in the world to legalize recreational marijuana, and lines of eager buyers are practically spilling into the U.S. People just can\u2019t get enough.
