{"id":26766,"date":"2018-09-21T13:19:46","date_gmt":"2018-09-21T17:19:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tun.com\/blog\/?p=26766"},"modified":"2023-10-31T11:33:50","modified_gmt":"2023-10-31T15:33:50","slug":"not-alone-mental-illness-widespread-at-universities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tun.com\/blog\/not-alone-mental-illness-widespread-at-universities\/","title":{"rendered":"You\u2019re Not Alone: Mental Illness is Widespread at Universities"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The mental health of college students, worldwide, is at risk. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurekalert.org\/pub_releases\/2018-09\/apa-oit091118.php\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thirty-five percent of freshmen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in a new study carried out by the American Psychological Association (APA) reported having symptoms of a mental health disorder, including major depression, generalized anxiety disorder and panic disorder. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The researchers analyzed data involving nearly 14,000 students from 19 colleges in eight countries &#8212; Australia, Belgium, Germany, Mexico, Northern Ireland, South Africa, Spain and the United States &#8212; who participated in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hcp.med.harvard.edu\/wmh\/college_student_survey.php\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">World Health Organization\u2019s World Mental Health International College Student Initiative<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They found major depressive disorder to be the most common symptom, followed by generalized anxiety disorder. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s not just freshmen who are at risk.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a separate study, involving <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more than 67,000 college students from across more than 100 institutions, researchers from Brigham and Women\u2019s Hospital (BWH) found high rates for stressful life events, mental health diagnoses and the risk of suicide or suicidal thoughts <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurekalert.org\/pub_releases\/2018-09\/bawh-sfh090518.php\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">among all students surveyed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the BWH study, 75 percent of students encountered at least one stressful life event in the prior year, while over 20 percent battled with six or more stressful life events. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stressful events were defined as ones that students found traumatic or difficult to handle, including academics, career-related issues, death of a family member or friend, family problems, intimate relationships, other social relationships, finances, health problem of family member or partner, personal appearance, personal health issue and sleep difficulties. These factors could lead to mental health diagnoses, self-harm and suicidality.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Twenty-five percent of the students were diagnosed with, or treated for, a mental health disorder in the prior year.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Twenty percent had contemplated suicide with 9 percent having attempted suicide and nearly 20 percent had harmed themselves.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another recent study showed that depression and anxiety ran high among graduate students.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this study, a research team from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.uthscsa.edu\/survey-shows-depression-anxiety-high-graduate-students\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">surveyed 2,279 graduate students<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by way of social media and direct email. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They found 41 percent <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of graduate students had moderate to severe anxiety while 39 percent had moderate to severe depression.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The rate of both anxiety and depression was higher for female graduate students than their male counterparts: 43 percent versus 34 percent in terms of anxiety, and 41 percent versus 35 percent in terms of depression. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The rate of anxiety and depression was also higher for transgender\/gender-nonconforming graduate students &#8212; 55 percent had anxiety and 57 percent had depression. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere is a growing cry for help from graduate students across the globe who struggle with significant mental health concerns,\u201d the researchers wrote in their paper. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, what can be done for students who need help?<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Ways to help at-risk students<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Colleges and family members who are sending students off to college need to remember that this is a phase of life where young people are confronted with expectations from new relationships and living situations and other encounters that are stressful,&#8221; <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/connects.catalyst.harvard.edu\/Profiles\/display\/Person\/48214\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cindy Liu<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the Departments of Pediatric Newborn Medicine and Psychiatry at BWH and lead researcher of the BWH study, said in a statement. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Some stressful events cannot be prevented and, in some cases, are completely normal. But for others, a plan should be in place for family, friends, and colleges to provide support.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many universities like the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) have programs in place to help at-risk students.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2015, UCLA, which has almost 45,000 students from diverse backgrounds, launched the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/grandchallenges.ucla.edu\/depression\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depression Grand Challenge<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in an effort to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">develop better methods of detecting, evaluating and treating depression. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In September 2017, UCLA offered <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/newsroom.ucla.edu\/releases\/voluntary-mental-health-screening-program-identifying-at-risk-students-at-ucla\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">free voluntary mental health screening<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to incoming students and counseling for those found to be at-risk. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The screening is just a first step for UCLA, whose researchers plan on developing innovative treatment options that would enable healthcare professionals to intervene immediately, rather than wait for at-risk students to seek help. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The University of Southern California has a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/appliedpsychologydegree.usc.edu\/college-students-guide-to-depression-anxiety\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">guide to depression and anxiety <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for college students on their website as well as a list of helpful resources.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the University of Minnesota Rochester (UMR), <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/r.umn.edu\/academics-research\/cli\/faculty-staff\/faculty\/biology\/andrew-petzold\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Andrew Petzold<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an assistant professor in UMR\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/r.umn.edu\/academics-research\/cli\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Center for Learning Innovation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, launched the \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tun.com\/blog\/exam-roulette-test-anxiety\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exam Roulette<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d when he learned his students were experiencing feelings of anxiety and unpreparedness before long-form essay exams.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students can also engage various strategies, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tun.com\/blog\/mindful-movement-reduce-anxiety-depression-stress\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mindful movement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">i<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tun.com\/blog\/visualizing-successful-futures-can-help-students-navigate-everyday-stressors\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dentity-based motivation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which have been found to be helpful in reducing depression and stress.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But, still more needs to be done to secure the mental health of college students, worldwide. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;While effective care is important, the number of students who need treatment for these disorders far exceeds the resources of most counseling centers, resulting in a substantial unmet need for mental health treatment among college students,&#8221; <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.columbiapsychiatry.org\/profile\/randy-p-auerbach-phd\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Randy P. Auerbach<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, associate professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Columbia University and lead researcher of the APA study on freshmen students, said in a statement. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Considering that students are a key population for determining the economic success of a country, colleges must take a greater urgency in addressing this issue.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/psych.nyu.edu\/shrout\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Patrick Shrout<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a professor of psychology at New York University, has a suggestion based on his team\u2019s recent study on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tun.com\/blog\/college-roommates-sensitivity-distress\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">college roommates\u2019 sensitivity to each other\u2019s distress<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBecause roommates are often strangers when the students start a school year, the schools might not have known that they would be accurate sources of information about each other\u2019s distress,\u201d he said. \u201cOur findings alert school counselors that there is information that can be gathered from roommates.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shrout and his team hope that school counseling services will take note of their findings and try to develop a training program for roommates.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:36px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n<p>[adthrive-in-post-video-player video-id=&#8221;lWDCamr3&#8243; upload-date=&#8221;2023-10-31T15:09:10.000Z&#8221; name=&#8221;Mental Health Resources for College Students&#8221; description=&#8221;TUN sits down with Jennifer Rothman, the senior manager of youth and young adult initiatives at the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), to discuss the mental health resources available to college students.&#8221; player-type=&#8221;static&#8221;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The mental health of college students, worldwide, is at risk.
