{"id":24943,"date":"2018-07-10T11:30:09","date_gmt":"2018-07-10T15:30:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tun.com\/blog\/?p=24943"},"modified":"2022-03-16T10:43:48","modified_gmt":"2022-03-16T14:43:48","slug":"universities-worldwide-blockchain-back-up-credentials","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tun.com\/blog\/universities-worldwide-blockchain-back-up-credentials\/","title":{"rendered":"Universities, Worldwide, Look to Blockchain to Back Up Credentials"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Traditionally, when students decide to apply for a job or graduate school, or to transfer to another university, they need to contact their college bursar\u2019s office for a copy of their transcript or academic record. &nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This method is often not just time-consuming and inconvenient, but can also cost money &#8212; seeming like a last-ditch effort by universities to scrape a few more dollars from students. &nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But now, universities across the world are making the leap to digital diplomas backed by blockchain, the same platform used to protect Bitcoin currency. &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This jump enables students or recent graduates to control their own records, giving them free access to them at any time. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It also makes transferring to schools, particularly those in foreign countries, much easier. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Any information stored on blockchain is private, cannot be touched by an outside party, and is in the system forever. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using blockchain benefits both the applicant and the person reviewing a transcript. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because paper transcripts and diplomas are easily manipulated through editing tools, employers and graduate schools often have to perform background checks. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the guaranteed security of blockchain, however, background checks can be conducted with the simple click of a button. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is blockchain?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blockchain is a growing list of records, individually called blocks, that are secured through cryptography. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each block is encrypted, timestamped, and added to a virtual timeline. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once information is added to blockchain, it can\u2019t be hacked or replicated in any way because the technology is hosted by millions of computers. There is no centralized version of blockchain, so a hacker would, essentially, have to disrupt the entire system to alter one piece of information. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Digital diploma debuts at MIT <\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The use of blockchain to secure <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/news.mit.edu\/2017\/mit-debuts-secure-digital-diploma-using-bitcoin-blockchain-technology-1017\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">electronic diplomas<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> started in 2016 at MIT. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A year later, a group of 111 graduates became the first to have a copy of their diploma secured on an app on their smartphone. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The app, called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/us\/app\/blockcerts-wallet\/id1146921514?mt=8\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blockcerts Wallet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, was developed through a partnership between the MIT Registrar\u2019s Office and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.learningmachine.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Learning Machine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a software development company. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This revolutionary development was the first to give individual people full control over their academic records. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFrom the beginning, one of our primary motivations has been to empower students to be the curators of their own credentials,\u201d Mary Callahan, MIT registrar and senior associate dean, said in a statement. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis pilot makes it possible for them to have ownership of their records and be able to share them in a secure way, with whomever they choose.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blockchain could back up credentials even in the event of a disaster, which could cause a university to shut its doors. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere are all kinds of disasters, whether it\u2019s a disaster of war like in Syria, or a natural disaster like in the Bahamas, or a technical disaster like in Equifax \u2014 these kinds of things happen all the time, and they\u2019re inevitable,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/chris-jagers-03252835\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chris Jagers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, co-founder and CEO of Learning Machine, said in a statement. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He claims that by linking credentials to blockchain, \u201cwe can ensure that we don\u2019t have a single point of failure and that people can actually own their identity documents without any ongoing dependency on the original issuers or any particular vendor.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Worldwide applications<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The use of blockchain to back up credentials is not unique to the U.S. Many universities around the world are starting to adopt the concept, and it could make transferring across country borders much easier. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The University of Nicosia in Cyprus was the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/digitalcurrency.unic.ac.cy\/free-introductory-mooc\/self-verifiable-certificates-on-the-bitcoin-blockchain\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">first university in the world<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to publish academic certificates on blockchain, starting in 2014. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In November 2017, it became the first university to issue all diplomas &#8212; bachelor\u2019s, master\u2019s and doctorate\u2019s &#8212; on blockchain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In October 2017, the University of Melbourne <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/newsroom.melbourne.edu\/news\/university-melbourne-issue-recipient-owned-blockchain-records?_ga=2.100100759.802664920.1507651467-1328473086.1507651452\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">became the first university<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the Asia-Pacific region to use blockchain to manage student data. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Financial University under the Government of the Russian Federation, based in Moscow, recently <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fa.ru\/org\/science\/irce\/blockchainlab\/News\/2018-06-26-diplom2018.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recorded all of the diplomas<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> it issued over the past 10 years on blockchain. Starting in September 2018, the university plans to make it possible for any potential employer to view a copy of each graduate\u2019s digital diploma on the university website.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In June 2018, the University of Pisa partnered with the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/translate.google.com\/translate?hl=en&amp;sl=it&amp;u=http:\/\/www.cimea.it\/&amp;prev=search\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Center of Information on Academic Mobility and Equivalence<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (CIMEA) to become the first university in Italy to adopt the technology.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;The project was created originally by a desire to speed up the process of registration of international students to our university courses,\u201d said <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unipi.it\/index.php\/governance-and-administration\/item\/9003-francesco-marcelloni\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Francesco Marcelloni<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, vice rector for international cooperation and relations at the University of Pisa. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The university prides itself in its commitment to internationalization and innovation in research and teaching, said <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unipi.it\/index.php\/governance-and-administration\/item\/8966-rettore-paolo-maria-mancarella\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paolo Maria Mancarella<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, rector of the University of Pisa and professor in the Department of Computer Science. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Pisa project is a stepping stone to achieving greater diversity within universities. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cImagine a future world where students can move from one university to another, in different countries, without having to physically exchange documents, with a view to full dematerialization,\u201d said Mancarella. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Altogether, this development makes the entire process of sharing credentials simple and secure. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe ability to have a digital certificate on blockchain will help students during and after their academic careers, facilitating the work of securities evaluators,\u201d said Luca Lantero, director of CIMEA. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Future applications<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moving forward, it may be possible to create stackable certificates on blockchain, enabling individuals to combine credentials from multiple institutions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People could have all of their degrees and certifications combined in one easy spot, ready to show to institutions and employers. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s not just about solving a problem,\u201d Jagers said in a statement. \u201cIt really is transformative. And it could be as big as the web, because it affects every sector. It\u2019s not just academic records. It\u2019s being able to passively know that digital things are true.
