It could be the difference between life and death. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, for the first time, a team of researchers has discovered a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.ohsu.edu\/2018\/06\/22\/research-team-discovers-drug-compound-that-stops-cancer-cells-from-spreading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">drug compound<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that can make cancer cells stay put. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMovement is key: the difference is black and white, night and day,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ohsu.edu\/xd\/health\/services\/cancer\/research-training\/research-programs\/bergan-lab\/dr-bergan.cfm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Raymond Bergan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, division chief of hematology and medical oncology and professor of medicine at Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU) and the lead author of the study, said in statement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf cancer cells spread throughout your body, they will take your life. We can treat it, but it will take your life,\u201d he continued.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bergan and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohsu.edu\/people\/ryan-gordon\/A2B4F93CCCBD446FB11ED552EE8D0AFE\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ryan Gordon<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a research assistant professor in the OHSU School of Medicine and the co-director of the Bergan lab, have dedicated decades to developing a method to fight the spread of cancer. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-24786\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tun.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/2018_0523cancermotility05_d94125ba-7576-42b6-8d43-076ff66127cf-prv.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"830\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>The study<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The team worked with compound KBU2046, which was developed in the lab of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chemistry.northwestern.edu\/people\/core-faculty\/profiles\/karl-scheidt.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Karl Scheidt<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a professor of chemistry and pharmacology at Northwestern University. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The researchers essentially took the compound that effectively freezes cancer cells and refined it until it could do its job without any side effects.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They determined that the key to the new drug was activating the heat shock proteins, also referred to as the cleaners of the cell. The drug attaches itself to the cleaner proteins to stop cell movement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe used chemistry to probe biology to give us a perfect drug that would only inhibit the movement of cancer cells and wouldn\u2019t do anything else,\u201d Bergan said in a statement. \u201cThat basic change in logic lead us to do everything we did.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A paper describing the team\u2019s full efforts is published in the journal <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41467-018-04465-5\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nature Communications<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThese efforts include defining the mechanism of action for KBU2046, as well as looking at the therapeutic effect of KBU2046 across numerous in-vitro cancer cell line models, inclusive of prostate, breast, colon, and lung cancer,\u201d said Bergan and Gordon. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Motivation for the study<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For years, the researchers have been driven entirely by their empathy towards the pain of those suffering from the disease. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Traditionally, cancer is treated by removing or killing the primary tumor and cells that have already spread. But often, by the time doctors detect the spreading, it is too late. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCancer causes death primarily by the spread of cancer cells throughout the body, which then grow to form metastatic tumors that destroy organs,\u201d said Bergan and Gordon. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe realized that if we developed a drug that stopped the movement of tumor cells, that this would directly address a primary mechanism by which cancer caused death, and yield a substantial therapeutic benefit to many patients.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Testing in humans<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The end goal of this research is to \u201cbe able to hand a patient with cancer that has not yet spread and colonized throughout their body a pill and say \u2018take this and your cancer will not spread,\u2019\u202f\u201d said Bergan and Gordon. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But before this happens, the pill must go through a significant amount of testing and FDA trials. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The team estimates it will take two years and $5 million of funding, and the team has struggled with finding donors. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWith respect to clinically developing a drug that stops cancer movement, this has never been done before,\u201d said Bergan and Gordon. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDrug companies are very reluctant to commit resources to things that have never been done before, and the cost of developing a drug is very high. We have therefore been experiencing limitations in this area, and expect to continue to do so for some time.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bergan and Scheidt have created a company, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.3crx.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Third Coast Therapeutics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is geared towards developing a method to stop the spread of cancer. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Currently, the researchers are in the process of performing good laboratory practice or GLP toxicology studies, which are required for a new drug application to the U.S. Food and Drugs Administration to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">assess its safety or efficacy. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Researchers from Xiamen University in China, the University of Chicago, and the University of Washington also contributed to this study.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Half of the battle when fighting cancer is making sure the infected cells don\u2019t spread throughout the body.
