A University of Central Florida study recently <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/today.ucf.edu\/hawaii-looks-banning-sunscreen-ingredient-ucf-research\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">helped bring Hawaiian legislators<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the table to ban an ingredient in sunscreen that can kill coral reefs. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Known as the underwater jewels, coral reefs house one of the most diverse ecosystems on the planet. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coral reefs truly are spectacular and they are very important economically, too,\u201d said <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/biology\/faculty\/john-fauth\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">John Fauth,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> an associate professor of biology at the University of Central Florida and co-author of the study. \u201cIn addition to supporting tourism, reefs protect coastlines from damaging waves and support commercial and recreational fisheries.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Need for protection<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over 500 million people around the world depend on coral reefs for food, income and more, according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/coast.noaa.gov\/states\/fast-facts\/coral-reefs.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (NOAA). In addition, coral reefs provide shelters and essential nutrients to a quarter of all fish species in the world and prevent $94 million in flood damages every year. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Researchers estimate the global economic value of coral reefs to be around <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.reefresilience.org\/coral-reefs\/reefs-and-resilience\/value-of-reefs\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$9.9 trillion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite all the irreplaceable benefits of coral reefs, we have already lost half of the world\u2019s coral reefs in just the last 30 years and expect to lose more than 90 percent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/environment\/environment-90-percent-coral-reefs-die-2050-climate-change-bleaching-pollution-a7626911.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by 2050<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To protect one of the world\u2019s richest ecosystems, in 2015, a team of international researchers that includes Fauth found that an ingredient in sunscreen, called oxybenzone, kills coral reefs and disrupts coral reproduction. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recently, the team\u2019s findings are waking up legislators around the world to action. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>The study<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2015, the researchers found high concentrations of oxybenzone in the waters around the most visited reefs in Hawaii and the Caribbean. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oxybenzone not only kills corals by taking away algae, a source of nutrition, but also deforms coral larvae, which are baby corals, by trapping them in their own skeleton, making them unable to float with currents and disperse. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.the-dermatologist.com\/content\/review-acds%E2%80%99-allergen-od-year-2000-2015\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> show that oxybenzone not only kills coral reefs, but also causes DNA damage and alters the hormone system in adults, causing low birthweight in girls and skin rashes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;We have lost at least 80 percent of the coral reefs in the Caribbean. Any small effort to reduce oxybenzone pollution could mean that a coral reef survives a long, hot summer, or that a degraded area recovers,\u201d Craig Downs, the executive director of the non-profit scientific organization Haereticus Environmental Laboratory and lead researcher of the study, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/today.ucf.edu\/lathering-up-with-sunscreen-may-protect-against-cancer-killing-coral-reefs-worldwide\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said in a statement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cEveryone wants to build coral nurseries for reef restoration, but this will achieve little if the factors that originally killed off the reef remain or intensify in the environment.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Changes are coming<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fortunately, things are changing. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On May 1, 2018, Hawaii <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-us-canada-43993407\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">passed a bill<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> banning the sale of sunscreens containing two ingredients that kill coral reefs &#8212; oxybenzone and octinoxate. It is the first U.S. state to take such legislative action. Fauth provided<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> testimony to support the case with his research.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two weeks later, Bonaire followed suit and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/62598-bonaire-island-bans-sunscreen.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">also approved a bill<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to ban sunscreens with the two ingredients.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also late last month, the Center for Biological Diversity <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.biologicaldiversity.org\/news\/press_releases\/2018\/corals-05-23-2018.php\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">filed a petition<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to ban sunscreen with oxybenzone. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#8217;s very rewarding seeing the results of our research being translated into action so quickly,\u201d said Fauth. \u201cHawaii and Bonaire are leading the way, and hopefully more governments will follow.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Call to action <\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While waiting for the FDA to respond, Fauth urges consumers to read labels carefully and use personal care items, such as sunscreens, lip balms and moisturizers, with the mineral-based ingredients, zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, in non-nano form. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These ingredients are as effective for sun protection and are much safer for both users and marine life. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCoral reefs are declining worldwide due to multiple causes, and we&#8217;re going to continue doing research and hopefully identify more common sense approaches for restoring coral reefs,\u201d said Fauth. \u201cIf everyone contributes just a little bit &#8212; like using sunscreens with safer ingredients, not fertilizing their lawn or applying herbicides in watersheds that drain to coral reefs, etc. &#8212; we should be able to reverse the decline.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Finally, lawmakers are listening to scientists.
