For most people, checking for a text, email or update has become second nature, and now research proves that we look at our smartphone more often than we are even aware of. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A team from two universities in the UK &#8212; Lancaster University and the University of Lincoln &#8212; has determined that <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lancaster.ac.uk\/news\/why-we-fail-to-understand-our-smartphone-use\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">checking smartphones<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has become an unconscious and extremely repetitive action. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The study is unique because it analyzed smartphone fixation through research techniques, instead of asking people to self-report their usage through a survey or questionnaire. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The researchers evaluated how often people truly look at their smartphones, rather than relying on people\u2019s memory. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn this analysis we wanted to get an idea of how consistent this behaviour is over time,\u201d said <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lancaster.ac.uk\/psychology\/archive\/people\/david-ellis\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">David Ellis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a lecturer in computational social science at Lancaster University and co-author of the study. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFor example, if I check my phone 80 times today, am I also likely to do this tomorrow?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The researchers found that while people underestimate time spent on their smartphones, the use is extremely consistent.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People who check their phones 80 times in one day are, in fact, likely to do the same every other day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOur results also suggest that rather than smartphone use becoming ever more frequent, people are actually very good at regulating this behaviour over time,\u201d said Ellis. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Standard surveys are unable to predict these behaviors, he explained. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>The research<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To conduct the study, the team gathered a group of participants and used a simple smartphone app that time-stamped when each person\u2019s usage began and ended.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis data was then processed to provide the number of hours a person&#8217;s smartphone was used each day. And the number of times the device was checked,\u201d said Ellis. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cChecks were considered as any use that lasted less than 15 seconds.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The team was able to conduct their research over a short, 13-day period, proving that other researchers that want to evaluate usage patterns don\u2019t need to track behavior for very long. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Why we fail to understand our smartphone use\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/T82Og3a_R_s?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>Health concerns<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Currently, there are many studies and debates regarding the health effects of screen time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The UK government is in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.parliament.uk\/business\/committees\/committees-a-z\/commons-select\/science-and-technology-committee\/inquiries\/parliament-2017\/impact-of-social-media-young-people-17-19\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">midst of researching<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the impact of social media and screen time on young people. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhat we can be fairly certain of at this stage is that people use devices like smartphones and social media frequently and habitually,\u201d said Ellis. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHowever, this does not equate to problematic usage.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt may seem reasonable to assume that those who spend a long time in front of a screen have problematic use,\u201d he continued. \u201cHowever, heavy users are not necessarily the same as problem users.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This study does not evaluate whether smartphone use is unhealthy. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead, it proves usage to be repetitive and capable of being analyzed with very little data. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOur study simply argues that, where possible, researchers should aim to collect short samples of behavioural data that measures actual time spent in front of a screen,\u201d said Ellis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis will help answer questions concerning how smartphone use relates to health in the future,\u201d he continued.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to Ellis, the research team included <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lancaster.ac.uk\/psychology\/archive\/people\/thomas-wilcockson\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tom Wilcockson<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a research associate at Lancaster University, and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/staff.lincoln.ac.uk\/hshaw\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heather Shaw<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a psychology technician at the University of Lincoln. <\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When was the last time you looked at your smartphone?
