{"id":24190,"date":"2018-05-24T12:38:53","date_gmt":"2018-05-24T16:38:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tun.com\/blog\/?p=24190"},"modified":"2022-03-16T11:54:20","modified_gmt":"2022-03-16T15:54:20","slug":"crowdfunding-women-advantage-in-business","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tun.com\/blog\/crowdfunding-women-advantage-in-business\/","title":{"rendered":"Crowdfunding: Women Face One Less Disadvantage In Business"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Historically, female entrepreneurs have faced a disadvantage when seeking financial backing, but <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/business.lsu.edu\/news\/releases\/Pages\/2018\/05\/Perceived-Trustworthiness-Helps-Female-Entrepreneurs-Gain-Backing-from-Crowdfunding-Investors.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">new research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> proves that perceived trustworthiness has made women more likely to gain financial support through crowdfunding platforms. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Crowdfunding is a system where a group of amatuer investors make small donations to a new venture. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Women have always encountered more challenges than men when attempting to start a business. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A stereotypical perception that men make better entrepreneurs than women has made it more difficult for women to receive funding from banks, private equity and venture capital firms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThey receive less than 2 percent of venture capital funding, have a harder time than male-led firms during IPO stages, and must give up greater portions of their business to obtain other types of funding,\u201d said <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/business.lsu.edu\/Ourso-College-Information\/Pages\/FacultyMember.aspx?UN=michaeljohnson\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Michael Johnson<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an assistant professor of management in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/business.lsu.edu\/Pages\/index.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LSU E. J. Ourso College of Business<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and lead researcher in the study. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAdditionally, we heard many second-hand stories about the culture of these traditional funding sources where they act as a sort of \u2018good old boys\u2019 club.\u201d he continued. \u201cJust imagine what the impact to the economy would be if women didn\u2019t start a step behind.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In contrast to most funding suppliers, crowdfunding investors are more likely to invest in female-led ventures than male-led ventures. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Crowdfunders don\u2019t view men as more competent than women, primarily because women are stereotypically perceived as more trustworthy. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCrowdfunders have the same gender prejudice as those in the population,\u201d said Johnson. \u201cYet, it seems to help women because of its impact on trust. All of these dynamics seem to give women an advantage in crowdfunding markets like Kickstarter.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The researchers believe another reason behind the female advantage in crowdfunding is because of the low-stakes nature of the relationships. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMany crowdfunders invest less than $50,\u201d said Johnson. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>The research<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To conduct the research, the team analyzed three years of data from Kickstarter, one of the primary crowdfunding platforms. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The team reviewed 416 projects and determined that women were more likely to have their ideas funded. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To examine the reason behind the results, the researchers conducted an experiment with 73 amatuer investors. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The results proved that implicit gender bias regarding perceptions of trustworthiness made funders more willing to donate to female entrepreneurs. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to Johnson, research was conducted by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/kelley.iu.edu\/faculty-research\/faculty-directory\/profile.cshtml?id=RSTEV\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regan Stevenson<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, assistant professor of management and entrepreneurship at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/kelley.iu.edu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indiana University\u2019s Kelley School of Business<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.suffolk.edu\/business\/faculty\/56749.php\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chaim Letwin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an assistant professor of management and entrepreneurship at Suffolk University in Boston.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The paper is published in the journal <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0883902616302798#%21\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Science Direct<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>The implications<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTraditionally, female business leaders have been told to act like men,\u201d said Johnson. \u201cThat is, play down feminine characteristics and emphasize masculine characteristics. Our research suggests that is bad advice for those in crowdfunding. In contrast, women should simply act like themselves.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stereotypes continuously hurt women in business. This is merely one case of prejudice working in women\u2019s favor. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt is always good advice for business leaders to attempt to limit stereotyping in their businesses, due to much research that shows the legal impacts to the company and personal impacts to the one being stereotyped,\u201d said Johnson. \u201cHowever, this is some preliminary research that shows stereotypes can modestly help a disadvantage that many women face.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This research does not suggest that prejudice in business is dying. Women still face severe disadvantages with nearly every other form of investment. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn essence, fixing the stereotypical bias in the greater capital markets would have a much stronger effect, yet that advice isn\u2019t necessarily helpful to the female business owner running into these challenges with banks or investment groups,\u201d said Johnson. \u201cIt seems crowdfunding represents a potentially better option that can help her grow her business.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Historically, female entrepreneurs have faced a disadvantage when seeking financial backing, but new research proves that perceived trustworthiness has made women more likely to gain financial support through crowdfunding platforms.
