{"id":24015,"date":"2018-05-11T14:43:20","date_gmt":"2018-05-11T18:43:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tun.com\/blog\/?p=24015"},"modified":"2022-03-16T11:59:05","modified_gmt":"2022-03-16T15:59:05","slug":"parental-support-children-career-success","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tun.com\/blog\/parental-support-children-career-success\/","title":{"rendered":"Does Parental Support Help or Hinder Children\u2019s Career Success?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">College graduates who receive direct financial support from their parents have greater career success, according to a new <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.ncsu.edu\/2018\/05\/parental-support-career-success\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe question underlying this work was whether parental support gives adult children an advantage or hinders their development,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/socant.chass.ncsu.edu\/faculty_staff\/amanzon\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anna Manzoni<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an associate professor of sociology at North Carolina State University and author of the study, said in a statement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Manzoni<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">surveyed data from the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/psidonline.isr.umich.edu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Panel Study of Income Dynamics <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(PSID) on 7,542 U.S. adults between the ages of 18 and 28. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Conducted by the University of Michigan, PSID has been gathering data on a nationally representative sample of over 18,000 individuals since 1968. Since the data has been collected from participants over time, it allows researchers to track an individual\u2019s occupational status by reviewing the average education and income of people in a particular occupation. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After reviewing the data, Manzoni found a prominent trend among college graduates. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Specifically, she found that college graduates who received money directly from their parents did very well professionally, while college graduates whose parents couldn\u2019t provide them with money but allowed them to live at home had a much lower occupational status. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBy using models that account for other individual and family-level variables, I found that parental assistance could help or hinder young people, depending on the nature of the assistance,\u201d Manzoni said in a statement. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though the paper doesn\u2019t specifically address why this trend is happening, Marzoni has some theories.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOne possible reason could be that residential support constraints \u200bgeographical mobility so youth are disincentivized from moving where good jobs are,\u201d she said. \u201cDirect monetary transfers instead support other types of activity, among which include personal investments, opening up further opportunities.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Manzoni believes <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that the study highlights one way social inequality is carried out generationally. &nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since the study suggests that occupational status for college graduates is linked to direct financial support from parents, graduates whose families have a higher disposable income may have a stronger edge after college. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Manzoni calls it a \u201cCatch-22\u201d as most families want to help their kids, but not all have the resources to offer the most productive support. &nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis research is important because it contributes to our understanding of youth development and the transition to adulthood, as well as of social inequality,\u201d said Manzoni. \u201cIt is unprecedented in assessing the effect of different types of parental material support on young adults\u2019 occupational status, which is particularly relevant as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">early occupational trajectories are critical to future development.
