{"id":23399,"date":"2018-03-20T10:20:20","date_gmt":"2018-03-20T14:20:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tun.com\/blog\/?p=23399"},"modified":"2022-03-16T12:08:00","modified_gmt":"2022-03-16T16:08:00","slug":"efeed-hunger-software-food-donation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tun.com\/blog\/efeed-hunger-software-food-donation\/","title":{"rendered":"New Software to Divert Excess Food to Those in Need"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A research team from Iowa State University has developed <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.news.iastate.edu\/news\/2018\/03\/06\/hungertech\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">eFeed-Hungers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a mobile-friendly software designed to divert excess food to those in need. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The research is led by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cssm.iastate.edu\/people\/sugam-sharma\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sugam Sharma<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a computer science expert and systems analyst in Iowa State University\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cssm.iastate.edu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Center for Survey Statistics and Methodology<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and is published in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0921344917304639\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Resources, Conservation and Recycling<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0736585317308468\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Telematics and Informatics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Hunger and Food Waste<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Growing up in India, Sharma witnessed hunger everywhere. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt is really heart wrenching to witness a mother in shabby and torn clothes, holding her baby, come to you and ask for help because her baby hasn\u2019t had anything to eat,\u201d Sharma said in a statement. \u201cThis I have witnessed often in my life.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After moving to the U.S. in 2006 to continue his education, Sharma realized India is not the only country with food insecurity. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hunger is a worldwide problem. According to the United Nations, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/hunger\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one in every nine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> people in the world are food insecure. This is troubling, especially as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.un.org\/en\/story\/2013\/09\/448652-un-report-one-third-worlds-food-wasted-annually-great-economic-environmental\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one-third <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of the total food produced around the world is wasted every year. In the U.S., food waste is even higher at 40 percent. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As he focused more deeply on his research on hunger, Sharma could no longer bear the profound contradiction <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and wanted to find a solution<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to use excess food to help the ones who don\u2019t have enough to eat. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, after nearly three years, Sharma and his team have developed a software prototype, eFeed-Hungers, to divert excess food to help those in need.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-23418 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tun.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/efeed-hungers.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"472\" height=\"342\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tun.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/efeed-hungers.jpg 472w, https:\/\/www.tun.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/efeed-hungers-300x217.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.tun.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/efeed-hungers-345x250.jpg 345w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 472px) 100vw, 472px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>Social Network for Food Donations <\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On eFeed-Hungers, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">restaurants, grocery stores and individual donors can post excess food they have to donate. Likewise, food pantries, volunteer organizations, and any one in need can search for food in any region of interest, usually their nearby locations. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The software\u2019s design allows for donated food to be taken to a public place, such as a food pantry or church serving free meals, for pickup and distribution. Donors can make a one-time or recurring donations by entering their information just once. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The software\u2019s interactive map, which is based on the Google address library and is easy to use, flags the type of food available for pickup as well as the hours of availability. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe wanted to make it as simple as possible, so people will not hesitate to donate,\u201d Sharma said in a statement.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is no scarcity of food. We see this as a way to take some of the food we\u2019re wasting and save it by providing a channel to get the extra food to the needy.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This software will be available as a web application that will be fully responsive to desktop, laptop and mobile phone, he told The University Network (TUN).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAlmost everyone has a cell phone and the technology has the potential for a much wider outreach,\u201d Sharma said in a statement. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>The Next Step <\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to continued tests of the prototype, Sharma and his team plan on implementing their software at Ames, their local community, in late summer or early fall. They are currently working on securing funding to provide education and outreach for restaurants, food pantries, churches and individuals interested in participating. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe plan to implement the software in India too, but currently, our immediate focus is on my local community,\u201d Sharma told TUN. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When expanding to other communities, Sharma and his team plan to engage academic institutions of a particular area to collect the data on users in their city. They plan to involve a group of students from local universities and a professor who will lead the team. Once verified, the collected data from each city will be migrated into the centralized database of the eFeed-Hungers.com and be available for use. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI don\u2019t know how successful we will be, but we\u2019re making an honest effort to tackle this problem,\u201d &nbsp;Sharma said in a statement. &#8220;If we can help provide food for even one percent, we\u2019ll be happy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A research team from Iowa State University has developed eFeed-Hungers, a mobile-friendly software designed to divert excess food to those in need.
