{"id":23132,"date":"2018-01-29T11:00:31","date_gmt":"2018-01-29T16:00:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tun.com\/blog\/?p=23132"},"modified":"2022-03-16T12:12:50","modified_gmt":"2022-03-16T16:12:50","slug":"stay-the-course-program-success","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tun.com\/blog\/stay-the-course-program-success\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Stay the Course\u2019 Program Keeps Students on the Path to Success"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A comprehensive case management program that helps students financially but, more importantly, addresses their day-to-day obstacles <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.nd.edu\/news\/success-in-community-college-aided-by-comprehensive-case-management-study-finds\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can improve graduation rate in community colleges<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, according to researchers from the University of Notre Dame. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The paper is published in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nber.org\/papers\/w24150\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Bureau of Economic Research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDespite the well-documented benefits of an associate\u2019s degree, most students who start community college never finish,\u201d said <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www3.nd.edu\/~jsulliv4\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">James X. Sullivan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, lead researcher, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rev. Thomas J. McDonagh, C.S.C., Associate Professor of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/economics.nd.edu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Economics<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and co-founder of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the Notre Dame\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/leo.nd.edu\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wilson Sheehan Lab for Economic Opportunities (LEO)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We need more information about how best to address this completion crisis. Success in school is critical for promoting opportunity and reducing poverty in this country.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fewer than 40 percent of community college students in the U.S. graduate within six years, even though community colleges are often an effective path not only out of poverty, but also to their dreams. To name just a few &#8212; George Lucas, the creator of \u201cStar Wars\u201d; Amy Tan, the bestselling author of \u201cThe Joy Luck Club\u201d; and Eileen Collins, the first female astronaut to command a shuttle mission &#8212; all graduated from community colleges. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The program, appropriately named <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/leo.nd.edu\/research\/projects\/stay-the-course\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stay the Course<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, was designed by LEO in partnership with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Catholic Charities Fort Worth and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tarrant County College<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to address the many factors that stand in the way of success for low-income students in college, including personal, non-academic, social, and institutional barriers. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Stay the Course program pairs undergraduates with trained social workers who can mentor them through non-academic obstacles, such as child care, that often make students drop out. It also provides students with limited emergency financial aid that they can use for unexpected expenses that might make them drop out. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe are currently facing a completion crisis in the U.S.,\u201d Sullivan said in a statement. \u201cThere is a real need for cost-effective interventions. Stay the Course is an example that has been shown to move the needle.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>How they tested<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From 2013 to 2016, a team of researchers from LEO and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the University of Maryland conducted a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">randomized controlled trial evaluation of Stay the Course at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tccd.edu\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tarrant County College<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a community college at Fort Worth, Texas. with approximately 50,000 students. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The researchers randomly assigned eligible students to three groups: one with full access to comprehensive case management and emergency financial aid, another with only emergency financial aid, and the last one as a control group. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then, they tracked every student\u2019s academic records for three years after enrollment in the program. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What they found<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The researchers found that the students who participated in the full Stay the Course program were significantly more likely to stay enrolled and to graduate within six semesters. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAfter six semesters, students who participated in Stay the Course had degree completion rates that were nearly 4 times as high as the comparison group that did not participate in Stay the Course (22% vs. 6%),\u201d said Sullivan. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But researchers noted no difference in degree completion rate between the control group and those who received only emergency financial aid. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The researchers also found that the program was particularly effective for female students who participated in the full Stay the Course program.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt is interesting that giving financial support alone is not enough,\u201d Sullivan said in a statement.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our study indicates that the involvement of a coach and mentor who understands the individual needs of each student is critical to improving outcomes for this vulnerable population.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, in a simple cost-benefit analysis, the researchers found that the earning boost that results from obtaining an associate\u2019s degree is more than sufficient to cover the cost of the Stay the Course program.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What they will do next<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LEO is collaborating with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Catholic Charities Fort Worth to<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> study the impact of Stay the Course as the program is implemented in other U.S. cities. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTo help low-income students complete their degrees, community colleges need to find ways to address the other issues that tend to knock students off track,\u201d Sullivan said. \u201cBolstered by the evidence, Catholic Charities Fort Worth is looking to expand this program to other communities.
