{"id":23093,"date":"2018-02-02T10:05:49","date_gmt":"2018-02-02T15:05:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tun.com\/blog\/?p=23093"},"modified":"2021-05-21T11:45:46","modified_gmt":"2021-05-21T15:45:46","slug":"test-fluoride-prevent-bone-disease","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tun.com\/blog\/test-fluoride-prevent-bone-disease\/","title":{"rendered":"Simple Test for Fluoride Can Help Prevent Crippling Bone Disease"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bath.ac.uk\/news\/2017\/11\/14\/fluoride-water-test\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">simple test to detect fluoride<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in drinking water quickly could prevent skeletal fluorosis, a crippling bone disease, according to a team of researchers from the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bath.ac.uk\/csct\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Centre for Sustainable Chemical Technologies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bath.ac.uk\/research\/centres\/wirc\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Water Innovation and Research Centre<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (WIRC) at the&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">University of Bath, UK.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The study is published in the journal <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/pubs.rsc.org\/en\/Content\/ArticleLanding\/2017\/CC\/C7CC07416F#!divAbstract\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chemical Communications<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fluoride is needed for healthy teeth, but too much of it can weaken bones and cause deformities of the joints and spines, which can be particularly dangerous for children whose bone structures are still developing. Exposure to elevated fluoride has also been linked to reduced IQ in many studies, according to the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/fluoridealert.org\/studies\/brain01\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fluoride Action Network<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Elevated levels of fluoride are found in drinking water sources in parts of East Africa, India, China and North America. This is due to water dissolving fluoride when it passes over certain minerals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While developed countries <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">usually have systems in place to monitor and control fluoride levels, that is not the case in parts of the world where there is a lack of piped water or fluoride treatments, such as India and Tanzania, and people are forced to rely on untreated water from wells that can contain higher than recommended levels of fluoride.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Levels of fluoride in groundwater fluctuate with the weather, particularly when there\u2019s heavy rain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Simple water test could prevent crippling bone disease\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/242076650?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2><b>The Test<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Led by <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bath.ac.uk\/chemistry\/contacts\/academics\/simon_lewis\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Simon Lewis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the team devised a simple color-changing test that detects high levels of fluoride quickly. When levels get too high, the color changes from purple to blue in a matter of minutes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMost water quality monitoring systems need a lab and power supply and a trained operator to work them,\u201d Lewis said in a statement. \u201cWhat we\u2019ve developed is a molecule that simply changes colour in a few minutes which can tell you whether the level of fluoride is too high.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fluoride tests used in the study are a proof of concept, but the team\u2019s goal is to create a test strip that is cheap and can be used by anyone. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis technology is in the very early stages, but we\u2019d like to develop this technology into test strips, similar to litmus paper, that allow people without any scientific training to perform a test that is low cost, rapid and robust,\u201d said Lewis in a statement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-23148\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tun.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Fluorosis-Can-Be-Prevented-With-Newly-Developed-Fluoride-Detecting-Water-Test-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"830\" height=\"533\"><\/p>\n<h2><b>Developments<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The team has partnered with the Nasio Trust, a charity organization, to develop the technology for field use in the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oldonyosambu area of Arusha Tanzania in East Africa, where <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fluoride levels can rise to more than 60 times higher than the U.S. recommended levels. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The charity \u201chas already sent us some water samples that will help us to improve this technology,\u201d said Carlos L\u00f3pez-Alled, the integrated Ph.D. candidate at the university\u2019s Centre for Sustainable Chemical Technologies behind the development of the fluoride sensors. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Field testing will start once the sensor has been immobilized on paper, he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The team is in the process of adding a new postdoctoral researcher who will work specifically on the immobilization of the sensor on paper strips, he added. He expects the strips to be ready by 2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Other Applications<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">L\u00f3pez-Alled is currently working on a \u201cmercury sensor that is showing to be very promising,\u201d he said. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A university in Colombia &#8212; Universdad de los Andes &#8212; is already interested in the mercury sensor, and the partnership will be formalized in the next few weeks, he added. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The team is also looking to adapt the technology to detect lead and cadmium in water.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">L\u00f3pez-Alled believes that the technology would be very useful in health care as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI think that colorimetric tests will expand from environmental science to health care,\u201d he said. \u201cThe rapid and easy detection of diseases could save much money and time to the health services and ultimately save more lives.
