{"id":23066,"date":"2018-01-23T13:36:15","date_gmt":"2018-01-23T18:36:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tun.com\/blog\/?p=23066"},"modified":"2022-03-16T12:14:32","modified_gmt":"2022-03-16T16:14:32","slug":"decker-school-of-nursing-telemedicine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tun.com\/blog\/decker-school-of-nursing-telemedicine\/","title":{"rendered":"Decker School of Nursing Gives Telemedicine a Big Boost"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Decker School of Nursing at Binghamton University is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.binghamton.edu\/news\/story\/887\/screen-time-can-be-healthy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">giving telemedicine a big boost<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with its new Southern Tier Telemedicine and Mobile Health Research Development and Training Center. Telemedicine brings healthcare to a patient via telecommunication and information technology without the patient having to travel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWith the new Center, we are able to expand simulation and clinical experiences for students as well as offer opportunities for the local community to explore possibilities in telemedicine,\u201d said <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.binghamton.edu\/dson\/contact\/nursing-faculty\/fronczek.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ann Fronczek<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, assistant professor at the Decker School<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cWe can expose students to telemedicine and technologies that they may or may not have a chance to experience during their clinical rotations.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Center is the product of a joint effort by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.binghamton.edu\/ssie\/people\/khasawneh.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mohammad T. Khasawneh<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, professor of systems science and industrial engineering in Binghamton\u2019s Thomas J. Watson School of Engineering and Applied Science, and Fronczek. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The new Center could expand healthcare to local, rural and remote areas in many different ways, according to Fronczek. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMy personal goal is to expand the knowledge level of what is possible in telehealth to our nursing students who are preparing for roles at all levels of practice,\u201d she said. \u201cTelehealth will never replace clinical practice in a physical setting, but we can certainly reach a lot more individuals who may not have access to care. Telehealth technology allows many different types of healthcare providers to expand their reach to clients in need of care.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Benefiting Students<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The new Center has three fully functional telemedicine cart set-ups where students can practice doing assessments that are transmitted to another location, according to Fronczek. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_23067\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-23067\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-23067\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tun.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/TelehealthCart.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tun.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/TelehealthCart.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.tun.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/TelehealthCart-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-23067\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image: Jonathan Cohen\/Binghamton University<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Center also has a telepresence robot that could open possibilities to experience clinical sites or education from a remote site, she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe\u2019ve built a little \u2018playground,\u2019\u200a\u201d Fronczek said in a statement. \u201cIf someone is envisioning what\u2019s possible, they can see the [equipment], play with it, touch it. The telemedicine cart allows us to conduct an entire visit; you can hear heartbeat and lung sounds, we have an otoscope [to examine ear canals and membranes] and an exam camera with high-definition transmission.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The students are taught to use the new equipment to communicate with patients by Decker School\u2019s clinical lecturer <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.binghamton.edu\/dson\/contact\/nursing-faculty\/jkitchin.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Judy Kitchin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Essentially, they are divided into groups in labs and take turns roleplaying as provider and patients. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe\u2019ll ask how they felt as the provider and how they felt as the patient, to learn how best to assess people over the screen while maintaining a nursing presence,\u201d Kitchin said in a statement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The results have been positive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe nursing students who have experienced the Center and the technology have found it to be very inspiring to what might be possible in their current and future clinical practice,\u201d Fronczek said. \u201cI think they are amazed that some of the virtual care that can be provided could be as good as seeing a patient in a physical practice setting.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Benefiting Rural Communities<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Decker School is currently working with hospitals in six surrounding rural communities to train their healthcare providers to help deliver high-quality care to underserved patients. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One such hospital is UHS Delaware Valley Hospital in Walton, New York, which is a 25-bed critical access hospital about 60 miles from Binghamton. The hospital has started offering mental health services, and plans on expanding into other areas of healthcare, said Fronczek.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Through the Center, the Decker School was able to provide the hospital with some of the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">initial equipment support and telemedicine technology needed to help the hospital establish its telemedicine program, according to Fronczek. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the Center does not provide clinical care from its facilities, it has the ability to support healthcare facilities in the areas of research, development and education, she explained.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Telemedicine is a boon to remote and rural areas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBecause we live in an area with challenging travel due to lack of public transportation and mountainous terrain, and our service area includes those who are economically disadvantaged, it can be very difficult, if not impossible for them to get a specialist,\u201d Dotti Kruppo, director of community relations for UHS Delaware Valley Hospital, said in a statement<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Telehealth provides access to care that otherwise is inaccessible.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is also difficult for rural communities to recruit and retain qualified nurses, so the Decker School also plans on \u201cgrowing our own nurse practitioners in these rural counties,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.binghamton.edu\/dson\/contact\/nursing-faculty\/nrouhana.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nicole Rouhana<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, director of graduate nursing programs, said in a statement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students who want to be nurse practitioners are required to complete 660 hours of supervised direct patient care in clinical settings where telemedicine could be used, she continued.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Decker School of Nursing at Binghamton University is giving telemedicine a big boost with its new Southern Tier Telemedicine and Mobile Health Research Development and Training Center.
