{"id":22863,"date":"2017-12-20T12:22:11","date_gmt":"2017-12-20T17:22:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tun.com\/blog\/?p=22863"},"modified":"2021-05-21T11:51:28","modified_gmt":"2021-05-21T15:51:28","slug":"sarah-lawrence-gryphon-scholarship","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tun.com\/blog\/sarah-lawrence-gryphon-scholarship\/","title":{"rendered":"Sarah Lawrence Student Club Funds New Scholarships for First Time"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A student-run investment club at Sarah Lawrence College, New York, has just funded two scholarships for the first time.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s always encouraging to hear about students helping other students, but this story from Sarah Lawrence College in New York is especially heartwarming during this holiday season.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The investment club <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/gryphoncm.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gryphon Capital Management<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was founded in 2014 by three students &#8212; <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alexander Wah, \u201819, Mat Gerak, \u201817, and Cameron Carpenter, \u201819 &#8212; who sought to fill a financial literacy gap in their education.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cGryphon Capital Management was founded with the purpose of helping students like myself fill a gap in my education by creating something new and valuable to the community,\u201d said Wah, president of Gryphon Capital Management.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Helping other people achieve what they wanted through this group was the main driver in its creation.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The scholarship, which was announced on September 4, called for existing full-time Sarah Lawrence students to submit an anonymous essay on why their Sarah Lawrence experience has been \u201cmeaningful\u201d to them. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe club decided to fund scholarships to give back to the community that brought us all together and allowed us to flourish,\u201d said Carpenter, vice president of Gryphon Capital Management.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fund had intended to award one scholarship in the amount of $1,000, but decided to award two scholarships of the same amount instead.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cGryphon Capital Management always wanted to give scholarships back to the community because we believed that this was the right thing to do,\u201d said Wah. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen we significantly outperformed the market, and this became even more feasible than before, we decided to fund two of these.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Background<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The club started with an initial capital investment of $6,000, funded by Sarah Lawrence alumni \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">who had gone on to have careers in the finance industry,\u201d said Carpenter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The initial capital was secured <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with the help of the head of the school\u2019s Board of Trustees, according to Wah.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe made an investors\u2019 pitch outlining the investment strategy we used to manage a fake portfolio, and showed how we had outperformed the market using that,\u201d said Wah. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cInside the pitch we also included proposed activities that we would use some capital to do, and it was capped off by personal stories about what Gryphon Capital Management meant to each of the current members.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The club is run solely by students, and has no faculty adviser.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The club\u2019s leaders spend about 10 hours of the week working on group activities in a typical week, but put in more hours when they are preparing for important group events such as workshops, events featuring guest speakers, and trips aimed at bridging the gap between the academic and professional world.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>More scholarships to Come<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The club plans on awarding one scholarship each year going forward as a way of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">redistributing its successes and filling the gaps other students at the school may have, said Wah<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFunding scholarships means using our group&#8217;s success to help our peers achieve academic success,\u201d said Carpenter.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is the greatest investment we could possibly make, as it is an investment <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in our community, and our society at large.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI think it is incredible that we are able to give something back to the school and community that have given us so much,\u201d said Samuel O\u2019Brient, \u201818, who serves as director of recruitment and head of publicity of Gryphon Capital Management. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;<\/span>I love the work that we do and it is great to see that others can benefit from it.
