{"id":22856,"date":"2017-12-19T10:41:36","date_gmt":"2017-12-19T15:41:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tun.com\/blog\/?p=22856"},"modified":"2021-05-21T11:55:00","modified_gmt":"2021-05-21T15:55:00","slug":"uw-madison-climate-action","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tun.com\/blog\/uw-madison-climate-action\/","title":{"rendered":"UW-Madison Faculty Presses University to Take Climate Action"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Faculty members at the University of Wisconsin-Madison are joining the fight to tackle climate change. They have adopted a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/kb.wisc.edu\/images\/group222\/shared\/2017-11-06FacultySenate\/2699revisedResolutionCallingforCreationandImplementationofaCampuswideClimateActionPlan.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">resolution<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> calling for the university to take action and adopt measures that would ensure an environmentally friendly campus. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The resolution encourages funding, creation and implementation of a campus-wide climate action plan with specific and measurable targets. Additionally, the proposed program would hold the university accountable by reporting and evaluating the progress of its sustainability goals to the UW-Madison community. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The faculty\u2019s goal is for the campus to be carbon neutral by 2050 or sooner. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCarbon neutral\u201d means making no net release of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere by reducing carbon fuel use and emissions, purchasing carbon offsets to fund projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions, or offsetting emissions through landscaping. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The resolution also encourages the administration to report progress on its goals to the American College and University Presidents\u2019 Climate Commitment &#8212; a network of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sustainabledevelopment.un.org\/partnership\/?p=2375\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">around 700 colleges and universities<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> around the country committed to climate action &#8212; and\/or the AASHE STARS (American Association for Sustainability in Higher Education &#8211; Sustainability Tracking, Assessment &amp; Rating System) or other similar system. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sustainability.wisc.edu\/asm-sustainability-committee-chair\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leah Johnson<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a junior and chair of the Sustainability Committee at the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.asm.wisc.edu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Associated Students of Madison<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, helped draft the resolution. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While she describes the faculty\u2019s move as a \u201chuge step in the right direction\u201d in an interview with <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailycardinal.com\/article\/2017\/11\/uw-madison-faculty-calls-for-administrative-support-of-a-campus-wide-climate-action-plan\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Daily Cardinal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, she said the onus is on the administration to act on the plan. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe [Faculty Senate] has the ability to influence the administration, but it is the job of the administration to act on it,\u201d Johnson told The Daily Cardinal. \u201cWhat happens next as a follow up to the faculty\u2019s passing of the carbon neutral plan will [show] what the university is actually prioritizing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There has not been any response to the resolution yet, Johnson told The University Network (TUN), but she does not think that means it went unnoticed. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe chancellor has a lot of other things on her plate right now and they are being addressed as she sees fit,\u201d she said. \u201cThis is a topic students seem very keen on rallying behind, myself included, so I would expect to see some action taken soon.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students have been thinking very ambitiously and would like to see an extensive adoption of clean energy as a main contributor to carbon neutrality, Johnson told TUN. There have been talks of trying to localize food purchasing and to make small improvements in buildings themselves to cut down on overall carbon emissions, she said. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere are a lot of ideas being thrown around, a lot of good ideas, and it is just a matter of time before some of them start being implemented,\u201d said Johnson. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The university recognizes that sustainability must be incorporated into the ways in which the facilities are being used and the campus being maintained, according to UW-Madison Chancellor Rebecca Blank who authored a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/chancellor.wisc.edu\/blog\/how-uw-madison-is-working-on-building-a-healthy-and-sustainable-environment\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blog post<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in September on current sustainability efforts. She listed education, outreach and research, projects to increase recycling, renovating and constructing sustainable buildings, and purchase of renewable energy credits from Madison Gas and Electric as some of the current efforts. Currently, 15 percent of campus electricity used annually comes from renewable energy. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis passing of this resolution was important in showing that the university is taking seriously the Chancellor&#8217;s call to be stewards of the environment and we should all expect to start seeing changes soon,\u201d Johnson told TUN. <\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Faculty members at the University of Wisconsin-Madison are joining the fight to tackle climate change.
