{"id":21985,"date":"2017-09-20T16:21:58","date_gmt":"2017-09-20T20:21:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tun.com\/blog\/?p=21985"},"modified":"2022-01-10T05:24:57","modified_gmt":"2022-01-10T10:24:57","slug":"heforshe-universities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tun.com\/blog\/heforshe-universities\/","title":{"rendered":"University, Business and Government IMPACT Champions Gather at Third Annual UN Women HeForShe Event"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today marks the third anniversary of the launch of the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.heforshe.org\/en\/our-mission\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HeForShe<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> movement, which was created by <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.unwomen.org\/en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UN Women<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the UN entity for gender equality and empowerment of women. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The movement takes a unique approach in that it specifically includes men and boys as partners in women\u2019s fight for gender equality around the world, motivating them to become agents of change and acknowledge that they, too, have something to gain when gender equality is achieved. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is therefore fitting that the 30 global leaders who had embraced the movement &#8212; all men &#8212; should <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0meet<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> today <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HeForShe IMPACT 10x10x10 Parity Report Launch<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> event in New York City <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to share their progress in advancing gender equality. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The HeForShe movement launched <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.heforshe.org\/en\/impact\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IMPACT 10X10X10<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a program calling on 30 global university, business and government IMPACT champions to bring about real change from top-down. Each sector has 10 leaders who serve as visible champions for change and commit to bring progress within their own organization.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The IMPACT champions were selected based on their reputation for strong ethical practices, their demonstrated excellence in public service, their global reach and relevance, and their willingness to use their full footprint and influence to drive and inspire change across their sector. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Current IMPACT university champions include two U.S. universities &#8212; Georgetown University and Stony Brook University &#8212; as well as Kenyatta University (Kenya), Nagoya University (Japan), Sciences Po (France), University of Hong Kong, University of Leicester (UK), University of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">S\u00e3o <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paolo (Brazil), University of Waterloo (Canada), and University of the Witwatersrand (South Africa). <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today\u2019s event was attended by all IMPACT university champions other than Kenyatta University. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Five heads of state were present: the presidents of Malawi, Romania, Rwanda and Finland and the Prime Minister of Japan. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lastly, corporate leaders from Electronic Arts, PwC International Ltd., Barclays, Ko\u00e7 Holding, AccorHotels, and Vodafone were also present. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UN Women was represented by Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, its Under-Secretary-General &amp; Executive Director.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><b>Stories of progress shared<\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Several IMPACT champions shared their stories today &#8212; the progress they\u2019ve made, the hurdles they\u2019ve faced, the solutions they\u2019ve found, and their plans for pushing gender equality forward in their organization.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"HeForShe 3rd Anniversary and IMPACT10x10x10 Parity Report Launch\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/h_1bYRLyG94?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">President of Malawi <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arthur Peter Mutharika shared a touching story of what it took to end child marriage in his country, which allowed over 1500 girls to return to education. In a statement issued prior to the meeting, he noted: <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe HeForShe movement provides an opportunity for the socialization of men and boys to support and promote women\u2019s and girl\u2019s empowerment. Men should commit themselves by signing the HeForShe movement.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the stories vary, the underlying message is the same. Gender equality is crucial, and the key is to drive change from the top of each organization, whether it\u2019s the head of state, CEOs of corporations, or presidents of universities. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The universal theme is that true change will only happen when men and boys embrace the message. It\u2019s only through working together that we can, for example, eradicate the practice of child marriage that\u2019s still prevalent in some countries, put an end to sexual-based violence, and banish unequal pay, and achieve gender equality.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>\u201cI always said if Lehman Brothers had been Lehman Brothers and Sisters, the collapse would not have happened,\u201d<\/strong> Shinzo Abe, Prime Minister of Japan, said during his presentation today.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Andrew Wilson, CEO of Electronic Arts, echoed the sentiment when it was his turn to share his company\u2019s contributions. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen all of us commit to equality, regardless of gender identity, real change is possible,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><b>Stony Brook University\u2019s efforts to promote gender equality<\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each of the IMPACT university champions shared his experience on the road to promote gender equality and common themes emerged. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Stony Brook University engages students from the day they arrive on our campus,\u201d Samuel, Stanley, president of Stony Brook, told The University Network (TUN). <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stanley <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has made gender equality at Stony Brook University a priority since he became an IMPACT champion. His goal is to bring real change by focusing on <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.stonybrook.edu\/happenings\/alumni\/we-are-heforshe-stony-brook-university-commits-to-take-action-for-gender-equality\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">three key areas<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for improvement:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eliminating existing gender gap \u2013 from matriculation to graduation \u2013 at the university;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using the university\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.stonybrook.edu\/commcms\/csmm\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Center for the Study of Men and Masculinities<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to build a global understanding of men\u2019s role in achieving gender equality; and<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Integrating gender equality into the academic and social experience of the university.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><iframe title=\"Stony Brook University is HeForShe\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9uXzuJTjiBA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A key topic discussed today was gender-based violence, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which the panelists agreed is a serious concern for students around the world. There was a consensus among the university champions that raising awareness by way of workshops, training sessions, and outreach programs is key to combatting sexual violence. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAll of our efforts as an Impact Champion in the HeForShe movement are bringing us closer to a campus community that eliminates the scourge of inequality and gender-based violence,&#8221; Stanley told TUN. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similarly, John DeGioia, President of Georgetown University, noted in a statement issued prior to today\u2019s event: <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFor me, the university is a privileged place, where education is a powerful instrument to develop long-term transformative changes of behaviors to address social issues such as violence against women and all types of discriminations.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each of the IMPACT champions has promised to encourage other universities to take up the cause. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this regard, Stanley has also strived to bring gender equality to the entire community within the State University of New York (SUNY), which encompasses 63 other campuses. He has been working closely with the Chancellor of the State University of New York (SUNY) and the other 63 SUNY campus presidents, so other campuses can also implement policies to bring about lasting change. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As an example, Stony Brook University hosted the first <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.stonybrook.edu\/happenings\/oncampus\/daring-to-make-the-future-stony-brook-hosts-first-suny-heforshe-gender-equality-conference\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SUNY-wide HeForShe Gender Equality Conference<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in March 2016. Over 130 people representing 26 SUNY campuses attended the conference. Stony Brook University faculty and staff discussed the programs put in place at the university to drive gender equality.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt is our hope that you take the ideas discussed here and bring them back to your campuses to stimulate further discussion,\u201d Stanley told the attendees that day. \u201cThe work you do today is extraordinarily important, not just for Stony Brook and SUNY, but for all of America and the world.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><b>Conclusion<\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>\u201cGender equality is not a women\u2019s issue,\u201d Wilson said during his presentation. \u201cIt is a human right.\u201d \u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is clear that each IMPACT champion believes this, and is committed to drive gender equality. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe results announced in today\u2019s IMPACT 10x10x10 Parity Report are inspirational,\u201d <span style=\"color: #000000;\">Mlambo-Ngcuka said<\/span>\u00a0in a statement. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn 2015, I challenged the Champions to \u2018think big\u2019 and commit to creative approaches that tackled the greatest barriers. We know that incremental steps do not bring us the benefits that we so urgently need. As leaders in their fields the Champions hold the key to breaking norms and making game-changing progress for both women and men.
